After first collaborating with Tha God Fahim in 2017, Your Old Droog was introduced to Tha God Fahim's close collaborator Mach-Hommy. Your Old Droog and Mach-Hommy built a friendship based on mutual respect, which eventually led to Mach-Hommy becoming the executive producer of It Wasn't Even Close. The creative process of Mach-Hommy allowed Your Old Droog to focus on subjects and themes he otherwise would not have addressed: It Wasn't Even Close is the first Your Old Droog album to mention both his migratory background from the Ukrainian SSR and his Jewish heritage.[5] Other topics include his frustration with the music industry and lack of commercial success.[4] The album marked Your Old Droog's first release in almost two years. It Wasn't Even Close was released without any previous announcements, other than the release of the album's sole single, "RST", a day prior to the release of the album.[6] A limited vinyl edition of the album, sold through Your Old Droog's website, contained a bonus Single (music)#7" with an exclusive non-album track.[7] The album was met with favorable reviews, with reviewers praising Your Old Droog's lyricism and the choice of features.[3][4][8]
