Ishai "Charles" Sheldner was the founder of Moon Shine Trading Company. He was born in Buffalo, New York to a family of food merchants, and was raised in the specialty foods industry. His family owned their own store specializing in exotic game called "Zeldner's Market," and as a child Zeldner worked in the store on Saturdays and during the summertime. It was during this time that he gained valuable knowledge about the specialty foods industry, such as how to butcher animals and successfully operate a business. As a college student, Zeldner lived in Israel, where he started to work as a beekeeper. After college, he lived in the kibbutz Beit HaShita (in Israel), where he assisted the kibbutz beekeeper. By the late 1970s, Zeldner owned his own bees and produced his own honey. In 1979, Zeldner founded the Moon Shine Trading Company in California in order to produce and sell top-quality honey, and started selling specialty honeys. Soon after founding his business, he married Amina Harris. The couple had two children together: Shoshana and Joshua Zeldner. Together with his wife, Zeldner created award-winning nationally recognized specialty foods. Ishai Zeldner died on June 17, 2018 in Davis, California. He was 71 years of age and is survived by his wife and two children. Today Moon Shine Trading Company is part of the family of Z Specialty Food, LLC in Woodland, California.
