Ilona Davydova is a Russian entrepreneur, author, and language educator.[1] She is the founder of Express-Method Education, a company specializing in audio courses for foreign language learning. Davydova's unique approach to language education has garnered widespread recognition. She has established a language learning center in Moscow's St. Arbat district, offering a distinctive methodology for mastering foreign languages.[2][3]

Davydova's contributions to the field of language education include her authorship of educational audio courses and books and her expertise as an educator.[4] Her methodology accelerates language learning and caters to the needs of learners at various levels, from beginners to advanced students.[5]

In addition to language courses, Davydova has also authored several books, including "My Life Experience," "Love in New York," “Me and death. Pandemic,” and “How (not) to stay poor forever.”[6]

Early life and education

Davydova was born in Nalchik, Kabardino-Balkarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, into a family with a background in Soviet science and education. Her father was a scientist, and her mother was an English teacher. In 1980, she immigrated to the United States with her family, where they faced significant financial challenges and the nullification of their Soviet-acquired credentials in the new environment.

Initially enrolling at Brooklyn College from 1981 to 1983, Davydova abandoned formal education due to disillusionment with the perceived limited value of higher education in the U.S. Instead, she embraced life itself as her university, navigating the complexities of adapting to a foreign capitalist society from scratch. She started working at restaurants in New York as a waiter’s assistant.

Struggling with the loss of her native language proficiency, Davydova devised an innovative "Express Method" for learning English.

In 1989, Davydova returned to her hometown in Russia, where she recognized the widespread challenges of language acquisition. This realization spurred her to develop audio courses and methodologies for language instruction. Her unique approach gained popularity not only in Russia but also in various countries, including the USA, Israel, Canada, Germany, and other nations with Russian-speaking immigrant communities.

Career

Davydova founded Express-Method Inc. in 1990, a company renowned for creating audio language learning courses. The company, with Davydova as its president, operates from offices in New York and Moscow.[7] Her courses stand out for their distinctive methodology, which emphasizes repeated listening and cyclical repetition of material for efficient and quick language learning by incorporating psychological research on memory into language instruction.[8]

Davydova has broadened the application of the "Express Method" from English language learning to proficiency in various foreign languages. Her method, guided by efficiency principles, emphasizes "Minimum time spent - MAXIMUM RESULT" and "Minimum effort - MAXIMUM RETURN." Davydova faced various challenges in her dual-country life, which have inspired innovative discoveries, shaping her contributions to educational materials. Her analysis of two contrasting systems provided unique insights, reflected in her literary works and creative pursuits.[9]

Davydova has established an educational center in Moscow that offers various courses, including the English Lesson Express Method for beginners and advanced learners and the German Lesson Express Method for beginners.[10]

Davydova’s entrepreneurial success and innovative language teaching methods have led to her recognition as a top 10 entrepreneur in Russia at the age of 27. Davydova is also an accomplished author, having written educational audio courses, books on language learning, and autobiographical works. She has authored several books, including "English for Beginners Level 1 and Level 2," and works focused on the German language.[11][12][13]

Additionally, Davydova has also authored autobiographies titled "My Life Experience" and "Love in New York." "My Life Experience" is a personal account of her family's immigration to the United States when she was 15 years old, reflecting on the challenges and changes faced.[14]

Davydova's expertise and contributions to language education have established her as a keynote speaker and author.[15] Her language learning courses have garnered widespread acclaim, with over a million individuals having benefited from her courses, available in multiple languages.[16]
