Huey Rawls (born January 21,1987) is an American filmmaker, producer, writer, cinematographer, and author based in Dallas, Texas.[1] He is the founder of So Nervy Films, LLC, a production company specializing in music videos, short movies, and narrative works. He is best known for his short film Dana's story, credited with several awards at the film festival circuit.[2][3][4]
Early life and education
Rawls was born Courtney Rawls on January 21, 1987, in Shreveport, Louisiana.[5] As a young kid, he enjoyed music and was a novice piano player. Rawls even sang in the choir and would occasionally freestyle battle with friends at school. His early passion for filmmaking was fueled by the 80's cult classics he watched as a child with his mother. During high school, his father gifted him a camera, and he soon realized his passion for photography.
In 2007, he witnessed the revolutionary actor Denzel Washington as an extra cast in The Great Debaters for Oprah Winfrey's Harpo productions.
During his late twenties, Rawls decided to quit his corporate job and enroll in a film school after a decade of experience. Starting as a self-learner, Rawls holds a degree from KD Conservatory: School of Film in Dallas, Texas, which he obtained in 2016.
Career
Rawls established So Nervy Films, LLC, in 2012, incorporating his background in filmmaking. He produced colorful, stylistic music videos, short films, and narrative works while experimenting with vintage film photography. Rawls specializes in all behind-the-scenes aspects from pre to post-production. His work began gaining notoriety, and he produced several music videos with notable artists such as Bun B, Mr. Lucci, DOC, Tony Rock, Money Waters, Dee-1, and Mr. Pookie. His other directing and screenwriting works include short films such as Hell Thou Loose, A Story to Tell, Life's Monologue, Self-Portrait, Sallad,[6] and Picture Me Rollin.[7]
Rawls is widely recognized for his work as a director and writer in the award-winning short film Dana's Story,[8] credited with several awards at the film festival circuit.[9]
Rawls is also a published writer of the book "My $20 Film Camera," which serves as a beginner's guide to basic camera photography. He highlights some of his best work shot on 35mm through the book.
