Hubert Edwin Weerasooriya (13 September 1916 – 25 November 2003) was a prominent lawyer and Crown Proctor, from the Galle District, Southern Province of Sri Lanka.[3][4][5][6][7]

He was the Vice President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka in 1981, and the President of the Galle Law Association [8][9][10][11] [12][13]. He was a member of the Weerasooriya family of Dodanduwa and Hikkaduwa.[14][15][16]

Early life and Career

Hubert Edwin Weerasooriya was born 13 September 1916 in Galle, the son of Edwin Robert Weerasooriya, a planter. Weerasooriya received his primary and secondary education at Richmond College, Galle, and later entered the Sri Lanka Law College to become a Proctor (Attorney-At-Law)[17][18][19].

While also being a Crown Proctor, Hubert was also an Acting Magistrate of Galle and Vice President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and the President of the Bar Association of Galle[20][21][22][18][23][24][25]

Personal life

Hubert married Rachel de Mel (17 December 1918 – 22 August 1987), daughter of A. P. de Mel and Alice (nee de Soysa), and granddaughter of Joseph de Mel of "Villa Kon".[26] They had 6 children, Shanthini, Manel, Rani, Nelun, Nissanka, and Chrisanthi.

Death

Weerasooriya died on 25 November 2003, at the age of 87.[27]

Bibliography

Weerasooriya was an avid writer[28], having regularly written articles and stories[29]. He had his own regular column, in which he spoke about his anecdotal memories, mostly from his legal career. He wrote his first book in 1945 and published several more books afterwards.[30][31][32][33]
