Huang Tu-Shan (1926-December 23, 2020) was a Taiwanese bamboo weaving artisan. He was born in Zhushan, Nantou County, Taiwan. During the Japanese colonial period, he was admitted into the Zhushan County Bamboo Craft Training Institute to study Japanese-styled bamboo and rattan weaving. He dedicated himself to the research, creation, and education of bamboo craft for a long time and was an important promoter of bamboo weaving in Taiwan.

Life

Huang Tu-shan was born in 1926 in Nantou, Taiwan. After graduating from Zhushan Public School in 1939, he was admitted into the Zhushan County Bamboo Craft Training Institute, where he stayed on as an apprentice after graduating and continued to learn from two Japanese teachers, Ikeda and Futagami, laying a solid foundation in bamboo weaving. In 1953, he began teaching at the Chiayi Craft Training Institute. In 1954, Yen Shui-Long launched the Nantou County Handicrafts Research Group, and Huang Tu-Shan served as an intern instructor in bamboo weaving. In 1957, Huang Tu-Shan was hired by the Taiwan Handicraft Promotion Center (THPC) as an instructor for the bambooworking training class in Guanmiao, Tainan.

After the establishment of the Nantou County Handicrafts Research Center (which was reorganized as the Taiwan Province Handicraft Research Center in 1973 and the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute in 2010), Huang Tu-Shan was hired as a technician in 1964 until his retirement. After retiring, he continued to focus on creation and transmission of bamboo art, and was deeply involved in research, creation, and education of bamboo weaving, making him an important promoter of Taiwan's bamboo craftsmanship. He passed away on December 23, 2020, at the age of ninety-four[1].
