Huang Paoyu (1918-2000) was born in Jiangsu, China. He graduated from the Department of Architecture at National Central University. Huang moved to Taiwan in 1949 and served as the first head of the Department of Architecture at Chung Yuan Christian University. He was considered as part of the first-generation of post-war architects in Taiwan. [1][2]。
Early life and career
Huang entered the Department of Architecture at National Central University in 1941. His graduation project won first prize in a competition organized by The Architectural Society of China（中國建築師學會）. After graduation he stayed at the university as a teaching assistant and studied under Professor Liu Dunzhen（劉敦楨） of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture（中國營造學社）. After moving to Taiwan in 1949, Huang first served as a lecturer at the Taiwan Provincial Chen-Kung College of Engineering (now National Cheng Kung University, Department of Architecture). Later, he became the head of the Architecture at Taiwan Power Company.
Huang went to study National Housing and Urban Planning at University of Pennsylvania in the United States in 1956. He then returned to Taiwan in 1960 and served as the first head of the Department of Architecture at Chung Yuan Christian University between 1961 to 1973. Huang founded Ta Chuang Architects（大壯建築師事務所） in 1961. He also worked as a part-time professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at National Taiwan University. During this time, he designed the National Palace Museum, which was completed in 1965. In 1972, Huang together with the faculty, students, and alumni of Chung Yuan Christian University, completed the Department of Architecture Building at the university. In 1980, he went to the UK to give lectures and later immigrated to Canada. He passed away in Toronto in 2000.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]
Architectural styles
Huang was inspired by his Professor Liu Dunzhen, who was a member of the Architectural Society of China. This society specialized in the investigation and research of traditional Chinese architecture, which greatly influenced Huang's architectural style later on. For example, his design for the National Palace Museum incorporated many elements of traditional Chinese architecture, including the Five Elements based on the ancient Mingtang（明堂） modular unit and traditional auspicious patterns.[10]
