Himanshu Pathak is an agricultural scientist and the Director of National Rice Research Institute..[1].

Scientific Career

Born on 2 February 1965 in West Bengal, he earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Chemistry from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in 1992. He joined the same institute as a Scientist. Subsequently, he was promoted to Principal Scientist (2009-2016) and Professor (2013-2016), in the department of Environmental Sciences, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi[2]. He joined as the Director of National Rice Research Institute in 2016[1].

Research

Himanshu Pathak's areas of research include climate change, soil science and environmental simulation modelling. He has evaluated and promoted resource-conserving technologies (RCTs) and integrated crop management systems to increase resource use efficiency and farmers’ income in rice-wheat system.[3]. He is also one of the lead authors for the IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and the 5th Assessement Report of IPCC[4]. Pathak has estimated the carbon foot prints of the Indian food items which shows that the emission of green house gases (GHGs) can be reduced by changing the food habits[5]. The emission of air pollutants from crop residues in India has been estimated by his research group [6] [7][8][9][10]and it has been demonstrated that rice straw with addition of Nitrogen fertilizer can be used to increase soil fertility[11][12]. He has published more than 170 research articles in international journals and which have more than 11000 citations with h-index of 54 and i-10 index of 142[13].

Awards & Recognition

Dr. Pathak is a fellow of two science academies of India i.e. National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences[14], India. He is also a fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology. He has also been awarded prestigious Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award for Outstanding Research in Agricultural Sciences 2018 from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research[15]
