History

Hiiraan Online (HOL) was founded in Ottawa, Canada, on July 1st, 1999, making it the first Somali news website. Its founder, Ahmed Gure, a former airline Captain with Somali Airlines who loved computers, started the website after realizing that the internet could deliver fast and reliable news to the growing Somalia diaspora.

The website publishes news articles, opinions, and political commentary[1] and remains one of the most critical[2] and reliable news websites in the Somali media landscape[3][4]. Hiiraan Online is regularly cited frequently in academia[5], books and international media[6].
