Hassaan Shazuli (born July 4, 2000) is a journalist reporting out of Colombo, Sri Lanka, with bylines on Al Jazeera, VICE World News, The New Arab, and Mongabay. His stories are often investigative in style with a focus on under-reported issues affecting society, the economy and the environment.

Education

Hassaan completed a few years of his primary education at Atamie International School before moving to Zahira College, Colombo where he completed schooling. He holds a Diploma in International Relations from the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies and is reading for a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Malaysia.

Career

The Sunday Times

Hassaan began his career in journalism in 2018 as a Trainee Journalist for The Sunday Times (Sri Lanka) tabloid in Sri Lanka. He reported for both the web and print editions of the publication, covering stories on politics, current affairs and those of human interest.

When the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks struck in 2019, Hassaan was dispatched to report from the Eastern region of Sri Lanka, given his ability to converse in both Sinhala and Tamil. As part of his coverage, he filed an exclusive report on a 'Shariah Campus' [1]that was being constructed in Batticaloa.

Hassaan also launched a WhatsApp News Alert service for the publication and an electronic newsletter which allowed The Sunday Times to gain more traction among online audiences.

News 1st

In January 2020, Hassaan joined News 1st – the news arm of MTV Channels Pvt. Ltd. – as an Executive News Reporter. In addition to filing his own stories, Hassaan anchored and produced the channel’s primetime news bulletin, handled breaking news, and also functioned in the capacity of a sub-editor.

He also hosted a show dubbed ‘Lost and Forgotten’[2] that revolved around the hidden histories of Sri Lankan cultures. Hassaan also made regular appearances on “Face the Nation”- Sri Lanka's only English current affairs debate programme aired on Mondays on TV1.

His striking report was one of a controversial proposed mineral mining project[3] in Mannar involving Australian company Titanium Sands Ltd, which prompted the government to cancel the exploration licenses issued to those companies.

Freelance journalist

In mid-2022, Hassaan moved out of News 1st to report for international media outlets such as Al Jazeera Media Network, VICE World News, The New Arab and Mongabay, on a freelance basis. He has since reported exclusively on a cryptocurrency scam, the crisis in Sri Lanka[4], and many other news feature stories including the lackadaisical approach of Sri Lankan authorities on enacting laws to combat animal cruelty[5]

His exclusive report for Al Jazeera on a cryptocurrency scam[6] in Sri Lanka, prompted local law enforcement authorities to arrest the men involved in the illegal operation. The case is being heard in court.
