Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka as well as the country's most populous metropolis. A population of 5.6 million people lives in the Colombo metropolitan region, with a population of 752,993 people in the Municipality, according to the Brookings Institution. It serves as the island's financial hub as well as a popular tourist attraction. It is situated on the island's western coast, near to the Greater Colombo region, which contains Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the country's legislative capital, as well as Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia. It is a popular tourist destination. Due to the fact that Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is located inside the urban/suburban region of Colombo, the city is often referred to as the capital. It serves as the administrative centre of the Western Province as well as the district seat of the Colombo District, among other functions. Colombo is a bustling and energetic city with a mix of contemporary life, colonial architecture, and historical treasures to explore.

The ancient merchants of Colombo were aware of the city's existence 2,000 years ago because of its enormous port and advantageous location along the East–West maritime trade routes. When Sri Lanka was surrendered to the British Empire in 1815, it was designated as the island's capital, and the city's position as the country's capital was maintained when the country gained independence in 1948. When administrative duties were moved to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte in 1978, Colombo was recognised as the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, and this designation remained in effect till now.
