Golimar (Telugu: గోలిమార్; lit. Shoot him) is a song and music video from the 1985 Telugu-language film Donga, directed by A. Kodandarami Reddy and starring Chiranjeevi and Radha. Sung by S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and composed by Chakravarthy, the song gained viral popularity decades after release for its visual similarities to Michael Jackson's 1983 music video for "Thriller".[1][2][3]
The video, nicknamed by fans as the Indian Thriller, features Chiranjeevi performing a zombie-themed dance routine wearing a red leather outfit reminiscent of Jackson’s Thriller music video attire. In the 2000s, it became a viral sensation with over 6 million views on YouTube with spoof English subtitles, reviving interest in both the film and the actor's dance style.[4][5]
In 2012, American dubstep producer Skrillex sampled "Golimar" in a mashup with his song "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" entitled "Scary Bolly Dub"—which includes clips of the scene as visuals during live performances.[6]
Background and production
Donga was a commercially successful Telugu action film produced by Samyuktha Movies. The music for the film was composed by K. Chakravarthy, a prolific South Indian film composer. The lyrics to "Golimar" were written by Veturi Sundararama Murthy, a celebrated Telugu poet and lyricist.
The film's standout moment was the "Golimar" sequence, which appears mid-film and showcases Chiranjeevi as a Thriller-influenced character executing a highly stylized dance routine with backup dancers dressed as zombies.
Influence from "Thriller"
The dance sequence in "Golimar" draws heavy inspiration from Michael Jackson’s "Thriller," which had become a global cultural phenomenon following its release in December 1983. Similarities include:
- Red leather outfit
- Zombie-themed backup dancers
- Nighttime setting with fog and horror motifs
- Funk/synth-based beat with a spoken-word intro
Lyrics and meaning
The lyrics of "Golimar" roughly translate to expressions of power, machismo, and action—consistent with the character Chiranjeevi plays in the film. The refrain “Golimar” (meaning “shoot him”) is used metaphorically to denote bravery or fearlessness.
| Telugu (transliterated) | English translation |
|---|---|
| "Ee polisoda bullet laantodi, golimar" | "This cop is like a bullet — shoot!" |
| "Nenu super copu, fightu lo topu" | "I'm a super cop, top in any fight" |
