Givebutter is a free online fundraising platform released in 2016.[1] The software operates in the United States and enables nonprofit organizations, schools, community groups, businesses, and individuals to raise money, host online and virtual events, engage with supporters and track donor data online.[2][3] Since its inception, Givebutter has processed over $300 million in donations from over 1 million donors.[4]

The platform was founded by Co-founders Max Friedman, Liran Cohen, and Ari Krasner, who were recognized by Forbes’ 30 Under 30 for Social Impact in 2022.[5]

History

Givebutter was launched in 2016 by Max Friedman, Liran Cohen, and Ari Krasner. The name Givebutter was originally intended to be a play on the words “give better.”[6]

The original iteration of Givebutter was a sweepstakes website, WeGiveTwo, that featured national nonprofits and charities daily and quickly went viral among college students across the country. Following the success of WeGiveTwo, the founders launched the initial phase of a complete online fundraising platform with an emphasis on transparent pricing and modern functionality.[7]

In 2016, Givebutter supported over 300 students across various universities to raise money. In 2017, student ambassadors represented the company at over 150 college campuses. In 2022, more than 10,000 nonprofits had run more than 35,000 campaigns on its platform, and Givebutter was enabling $150 million dollars in donations a year.[8]

Givebutter is now a fully remote company with more than 30 full-time employees across North America.

Mission

Givebutter’s stated mission is “to empower the changemaker in all of us” and calls itself “the world’s most people-centric fundraising platform.[9] Givebutter’s founders frequently emphasize the individual happiness derived through charitable giving and strive to make Givebutter a fun and enjoyable experience for both users and donors.[10]

Platform

Givebutter acts as a one-stop fundraising platform for sports teams, nonprofits, student organizations, and companies by offering tools for running campaigns, collecting donations, and sending tickets to fundraising events. The cloud-based, software as a service platform offers three integrated products: Raise, Track and Engage, which can be used individually or together within the Givebutter platform.[11]

Givebutter’s crowdfunding platform is built on a self-service CRM dashboard, which helps small groups track and improve their fundraising efforts. Givebutter aims to help nonprofits, various groups, and chapter-based organizations with fundraising activities and provide them access and reach to donors, members, supporters, and advocates with an easy way to give. The Givebutter users and fundraisers are able to accept donations, both one-time and recurring, via credit card, debit card, and Venmo. A customized widget can be created and embedded into the website for accepting donations and custom donation amounts can be added to the widget to give donors a choice of options.[12]

The fundraising solution offered by Givebutter provides tools for creating custom fundraising pages, setting up goals, collaborating with teams, and tracking progress. The platform also facilitates its users to sell rockets for fundraising events using the events module, and users can also set ticket prices, and types and can raise additional donations while selling tickets. Other functions offered by the Givebutter platform include custom receipts, payouts, trackable links, permissions management, third-party user integrations powered by Zapier, and leaderboards for team members.[13]

Funding

In July 2022, Givebutter announced that it had raised its first-ever seed investment of $7.25 million from more than 50 investors, including Ardent Venture Partners, Hyper, and individual leaders and investors from industry-leading companies including Calendly, Loom, Mailchimp, Zapier, Smartsheet, Twitter, Stripe, Toast, and Bloomberg.[14]

Business model

Givebutter employs a “low-fee business model,” meaning that instead of charging subscription fees to users, the company relies on optional tips from donors to generate revenue. The “Optional Tip-or-Fee” model for generating revenue, which results in an average fee to users across all campaigns on Givebutter of 0.5%. In September 2021, Givebutter announced that all features on the platform (not just Donation Forms) would be free for all users. There are no contracts or subscription fees for any user who raises money on the platform.[15]

Pricing

Givebutter is free to use, with a 0% platform fee model that is powered by optional tips. Users can turn off the optional tips on any campaign, but a Platform fee of 1 to 5% is then applied based on the features used. The donation form fee is 1%, the fundraising page fee is 3%, and the event fee is 5%.[16]

The Givebutter payment processing fees are always 2.9% + $0.30 for all payment methods except for ACH, which offers a reduced rate of 1.9% + 30¢ per transaction. Over 95% of the donors choose to cover this fee, and users can configure their campaign settings to require donors to cover these fees as part of their donation.[17]
