Gianluca Neri worked for the satirical magazine "Cuore" and, with the illustrator Roberto Grassilli, he later founded and managed the internet portal Clarence, later sold to Spray Network[1] and then to Lycos[2] and Dada. He is a contributor to several monthly magazines and manages Macchianera, a multi-author blog.

Since 2003 he has been organizing the "Festa della Rete" (once called "Blogfest"), a gathering of internet users, which takes place over three days, sometime after the summer. After the first editions in Riva del Garda, since the 2013 edition, the festival has moved to Rimini. Every year within the event the Macchianera Italian Awards (MIA) are assigned, to reward the best Italian sites and blogs. On December 20, 2013, at the Vatican, during the hand-kissing ceremony at the end of the Wednesday general audience, he delivered in the hands of Pope Francis the award as "Person of the Year".

On December 30, 2020, his documentary series "SanPa: Sins of the Savior" was released in 190 countries as a Netflix original. He wrote, produced, and was the showrunner of the series, directed by Cosima Spender.
