Georgije "Đoka" Kraljevački (1840–1906) is one of the first Serbian and early European photographers. He was a painter by education.[1]

Biography

He was born in Novi Sad[2] around 1840. in the then Kingdom of Hungary (1526–1867). He devoted himself to photography.[3] He acquired his photographic knowledge in the second half of the 19th century in Stuttgart (in Germany). He was engaged in photography in Novi Sad and Belgrade "across from Zeleni venc". to him.[4][5]

He mostly painted portraits of contemporaries from the middle and upper middle classes, warriors of the Serbian wars and public figures. He was among the first in Serbia to take portraits of wedding couples in business card format.[6][7]

Photos from the studio of Đoka Kraljevački, with motifs of women in folk costumes, were used by the famous interwar Oenology Petar Živković to illustrate some of his works.[1] As photography became cheaper and ceased to be the privilege of only a small number of wealthy people, it became an everyday occurrence for an increasing number of people, enabling them to remember their own past.

He died in Palilula City Municipality in 1906 in Belgrade, where he was buried at the Belgrade New Cemetery.[8]

Kraljevački is represented in many state and private collections, institutions, encyclopedias and publications:

  • Teatron – magazine for theater art, in numbers 156 and 157 on page 163, and page 169 under number 128, mentions Georgi Kraljevački and his contribution in the field of theater art.[9]
  • It is also mentioned in the ethnographic collection of Serbian folklore. Photos from Kraljevački played a significant role in the memory of Serbian folklore. He was also the first in Serbia to start photographing wedding ceremonies. .[10]
  • Along with several Serbian photographers, he is represented in Encyclopedia of nineteenth-century photography by John Hanaway.[11]
