George Howell (b. August 1980) is a researcher and former fashion model.[1] After retiring from the catwalk, Howell began working in policy research and is currently a Director at RAIN+ Industry, a division of RAIN Research group.[2]

Modelling career

Howell first became a model after being spotted by fashion designer Alexander McQueen while working as a dog walker in London. From 1999 to 2001, Howell worked as a model for McQueen and his collaborator Katy England. He was represented by Storm Management.

Howell went on to work for a number of prominent fashion photographers of the time including Mario Testino, Terry Richardson, and Juergen Teller.

In 1999, Howell featured in Stüssy worldwide campaign, photographed by Juergen Teller. Howell also appeared in runway shows such as in Comme des Garcons Homme Plus Spring Summer collection of 2000.[1]

Education

In 2004, Howell graduated with a BA in Social Anthropology from Goldsmiths, University of London[3] . Two years later, in 2006, he obtained a Master of Science degree in Development Studies, from the SOAS University of London| and African Studies in London. George Howell’s Master’s thesis entitled “The North-South environmental crisis: an unequal ecological exchange analysis” was published as part of The New School Economic Review’s[4] “Development Issue” in 2007.[5]

Later career

In 2006, Howell began working for The International Council on Security and Development (ICOS), together with Norine MacDonald, Emmanuel Reinert, Jorrit Kamminga and Fabrice Pothier, the think tank conducted research into security in Afghanistan.[6][7]

In 2008, Howell helped establish The Centre for Excellence on Public Security in Rio de Janeiro, a think tank based in Rio de Janeiro working to bring together policy makers, operational law enforcement officers and independent experts together to offer solutions to complex Public Security issues.

In his work for ICOS, Howell has appeared as a public security expert in The Atlantic and other publications on the subject of security in Rio’s favelas.[8]

In 2020, Howell co-authored with Norine MacDonald, a paper for National Defense University’ PRISM Magazine “Singularity” issue, published in January 2020, with the title: “Killing Me Softly: Competition in Artificial Intelligence and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles”[9] on the subject of the use of artificial intelligence in military unmanned aerial vehicles.

Personal life

George Howell was born in Basingstoke in 1980 and grew up in Cardiff and London in the United Kingdom.

Howell is the son of performance artist and poet Anthony Howell (performance artist) and Assyriologist and writer Gwendolyn Leick. George Howell’s Great Grandfather was Brigadier General Philip Howell.
