Dr. Geoffrey Aori Mabea is a Kenyan energy economist and diplomat. He is the current Executive Secretary.[1][2][3]for the Energy Regulators Association of East Africa(EREA) based in Arusha, Tanzania. He assumed office on 2 January 2020 as the first Executive Secretary[4]of the regional Organisation. Prior to joining EREA, Mabea was a researcher at the University of Dundee[1]. He also served as a capital projects Advisor with PriceWaterHouseCoopers[5][6] and as a Chief Engineer projects performance with Geothermal Development Company.

Background and Education

Dr Mabea began his education at Mecheo primary school before proceeding to St. Andrews Kaggwa primary school-both schools are in Nyamira County.

He attended Kisii school and thereafter, admitted to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology for a Bachelor's degree in Geoinformatics. Having been awarded the Chevening Scholarship[7], funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Dr Mabea was admitted to the University of Surrey for his postgraduate course in Energy economics and Policy. He later pursued a Phd at the University of Dundee Scotland on a Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy(CEPLMP) Scholarship. His thesis title is 'The economic benefits of market integration in the East Africa Power Markets'[8]. He is also a SAP Certified Application Associate – Project Systems with SAP ERP.

Work history

Dr Mabea started his career as a Port Surveyor with the Kenya Ports Authority before switching his career into the Energy market. He worked briefly with Kenya Electricity Generating Company(KenGen) in Kenya as a Project planning Engineer before joining to work with Geothermal Development Company as a senior Strategic planning Engineer[9]. During this tenure, he served as a member of both Energy planning and Feed-in tariff committees for Kenya. Dr Mabea was appointed as Chief engineer, Energy Projects, to spearhead the Project managementof Geothermal energy at Menengai and Olkaria fields. He was later appointed to the capacity building cluster committee of the Northern Corridor Integration Projects(NCIP) as representative from Geothermal Development Company under the Ministry of Energy Kenya. In 2014, he joined PriceWaterHouseCoopers first, as capital projects advisor[5] [3]and later as a Consultant before taking up his Doctorate. He also served as Co-convener for DARN[10] and Researcher at the Dundee Extractives Hub.[11]

In 2020, the Energy Regulators Association of East Africa, called EREA, established a permanent Secretariat at Arusha, Dr Mabea was appointed as its first Executive Secretary[12][13][14]. He continues to research and publish on Regional integration of energy markets.

Personal life

Mabea is the last born of the family of Stephen Mabea and Elizabeth Mabea of Borabu Division,Nyamira County, Mecheo Village. He is a married father of two children.
