Major Gaurav Arya (Retd.) (born 25 September 1972) is an Indian Army veteran turned defense journalist, recognized for his strategic defense analysis, television commentary, and public speaking. He currently serves as Senior Consulting Editor for Strategic Affairs at Republic Media Network.[1]

Early Life and Military Career

Arya earned a BA (Hons) in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, in 1992, then completed his training at the Officer Training Academy in Chennai. He was commissioned into the 17th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment in March 1994. In 1996, he endured being buried under snow during a post at high altitude, leading to medical retirement as Major in 1999 due to health issues.

Corporate and Media Career

After retiring, Arya completed an MBA and held senior roles in companies such as HCL, Vodafone (formerly Hutch), Wipro, Ernst & Young, Spice Retail, Sterea Infratech, and Smart Group.[2] In March 2017, he joined Republic TV as Advisor on Defence & Strategy, later hosting notable shows like Patriot and Blitzkrieg. He also founded the Chanakya Forum, a digital publication focused on geopolitics, national security, and foreign affairs.[3]

Public Speaking and Influence

Arya is a prominent public speaker, addressing institutions such as Oxford, King’s College London, Indian Military Academy, IIT Roorkee, JNU, as well as being invited to speak at the UK Parliament on Kashmir.[4]

Publications and Online Presence

He gained national attention with his 2016 “Open Letter to Burhan Wani,” featured in Swarajya, which triggered widespread discussion. He hosts a YouTube channel, The Chanakya Dialogues, which focuses on defense and strategic affairs.[5]
