Fredrick Nwabufo, is a Nigerian[1] journalist and writer. He is the chief executive and publisher of TheLink News[2]. He writes for other news media predominantly online news platforms. His columns are published by Premium Times[3], TheCable[4], Sahara Reporters, The Guardian Newspapers[5], Daily Trust Newspapers[6], The Nation Newspapers, PM News[7], People's Gazette[8], Daily Post[9], This Day Newpapers[10]etc. He was at different times the Abuja bureau chief, deputy editor and Nation's Capital editor at TheCable Newspapers between April 2014 and September 2022. Nwabufo writes on socio-economic and national issues.[11][12][13] -- governance, human rights, economy, insecurity, culture and community, social prejudices, and foreign relations[14][15][16]. His writings are discussed in the academia and other forums[17]. In 2020, he was issued multiple death threats[18] [19][20] by the proscribed group IPOB for his advocacy for a unified country[21]. His writings on the Chibok girls[22] and Kagara & Jangebe school children's kidnappings[23] are two of his researched exposé on banditry and insecurity in Nigeria[24].
Early Life
Nwabufo is from Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state, Nigeria. He was born and raised in Lagos Stateto the family of Nnamdi and Esther Nwabufo both deceased. He is the first of four children. For him, growing up on reggae music and the literary works of African writers and poets Buchi Emecheta, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Ben Okri shaped his personal ideals and the pursuit of a career in writing and journalism.
Academics
Fredrick Nwabufo's early years and primary education was in Lagos. He attended Government Secondary School in Abuja and obtained a Bachelor's degree in History and International Relations from Nnamdi Azikwe University. He is certified in mobile journalism by the Knight Centre of Journalism in the Americas and holds a certificate of participation in Journalism from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland.
Career in Journalism
Nwabufo's start in journalism as a corper under the mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme for every Nigerian between the ages of 18 and 30 that has completed undergraduate studies. He was the editor of the Corps' official magazine for Ekiti State in 2009. After exploring some private sector roles, he joined Odenigbo 99.1 FM, Obosi, Anambra state as an On Air presenter in 2012. He was an editor at The News Chronicle, Abuja in 2013 and joined TheCable Newspaper as deputy editor in 2014. He was made the online news platform's Abuja bureau chief in 2016. He has joined conversations and provided opinions on different platforms like Africa Media Works’ Yanga TV[25] UK; Newsday on The BBC World News Service, London;[26][27] Africa Independent Television, Silverbird TV; News Central, TVC, ITV e.t.c. In the course of his career, he has conducted interviews with global icons including a sit-down with the Nobel Laureate, Malala Yousafzai[28]. He has also freelanced on editorials across initiatives with several institutions including the African Development Bank.
Advocacy
Fredrick Nwabufo shares pro-democratic views and gained a certificate in conflict analysis from the United States Institute of Peace in 2014[29]. In 2020, under the discordance of the secessionist agitation in the South-East, he began the “One Nigeria” campaign.[30] [31]Advocating a united Nigeria, peace, and dialogue[32][33] [34]while writing essays and joining causes on issues that bordered on corruption, human rights violations, and impunity.[35][36][37][38]
Journalists for United Nigeria (JUN)
In 2021, Nwabufo convened Journalists for United Nigeria (JUN)[39][40], an ideological group for journalists committed to peace-building, and progress[41][42][43]. He claims that the group is non- partisan, and is purposed for exchanging ideas to foster national unity.[44][45][46]
TheLinkNG.ng
In September 2022, Fredrick Nwabufo launched the TheLinkng.ng, an online news platform[47][48][49].
