The city of Florence serves as the county seat of Florence County in South Carolina, United States, and is located inside the county. It is the easternmost point where Interstate 20 and Interstate 95 meet, and it is located at the intersection of the two highways. It is the principal city in the Florence metropolitan region as well as the seat of government for Florence County, which it is a part of. The region is the heart of the historic "Pee Dee" region of South Carolina, which encompasses eight counties in the northwestern part of the state as well as parts of the southeastern part of the neighbouring state of North Carolina. Florence had a population of 37,056 according to the census completed in 2010, and the population was anticipated to reach 38,531 in 2019.

One of the most important cities in the state of South Carolina is Florence. In 1965, the National Civic League honoured the city of Florence by bestowing upon it the All-American City title. The city was established as a railroad centre, and it eventually became the intersection of three important railroad lines, including the Cheraw and Darlington, the Northeastern, and the Wilmington and Manchester.

The administration that oversaw the Reconstruction era granted the city of Florence its charter in 1871, and it became an official municipality in 1890. The city was a component of one of the first townships that was mapped out by the Lords Proprietors in 1719 before it was even granted its own charter. The region was not completely inhabited until the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. The first inhabitants lived off the land by engaging in subsistence farming and producing goods like as indigo, cotton, naval stores, and lumber. These goods were transported down the Great Pee Dee River to the port in Georgetown, where they were then sent out of the country. Around the middle of the 19th century, construction began on two railroads that crossed paths with one another: the Wilmington and Manchester and the Northeastern. The current president of the W & M, Gen. W. W. Harllee, erected his mansion near the intersection, and he called the hamlet "Florence" after his daughter, also named Florence.

The South Carolina city of Florence is situated on the coastal plain of the state. It is located in the upper northwestern region of Florence County and in the upper northeastern part of the state. The elevation above mean sea level is around 140 feet on average (43 m). The primary stream that travels through the city is Jeffries Creek, which is a tributary of the Great Pee Dee River and runs south of the city's central business district. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the city covers a total area of 20.9 square miles (54.2 km2), of which 20.9 square miles (54.1 km2) are land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), representing 0.22 percent of the total area, is water.

The climate that is experienced is a humid subtropical climate that is typical of the deep south, particularly in inland areas that are distant from the shore. The seasons of fall, winter, and spring are generally pleasant, with some winter nights falling below freezing. However, protracted periods of extreme cold and severe circumstances are uncommon. The summers in Florence may be exceedingly warm and muggy at times. Inversions, which may trap ozone and other pollutants over an area, are common in the Southeast, and this city, like others in the region, is prone to them.
