Files.fm is a cloud file storage platform founded by Janis Viklis and Didzis Kalejs, launched in 2012 on top of the existing Latvian version Failiem.lv. It is owned and operated by European company "Files.fm" and provides data storage, file sharing and publishing, file synchronization, backup, e-commerce and hosting services, with 1,5 million monthly visits.[2]
Files.fm uses a freemium business model and has Basic, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans that include storage and features. Basic account by default has 5GB of storage space, but users can earn up to 20GB of space through the bonus program. Users are allowed to upload more data than 5GB in their account, however an automatic deletion period of 1 month is set for files that exceed the permanent account storage.
Users can share files without an account via unique link and select an automatic deletion date from 1 day up to 2 months.
Users can download files in direct mode and Peer-to-Peer supported mode via integrated Webtorrent library, as well asing streaming videos in P2P-supported mode. P2P download mode is not limited by traffic constraints and files are scanned for viruses.
Business account storage is shared across all sub accounts allowing for single billing and management of multiple users at a single company.
Both public and private file sharing mode are both supported on the platform.
Platform provides web restful API and supports standard Webdav protocol, including file locking and versioning features.
History
- In November 2008, the first version of Files.fm was launched under the Latvian name Failiem.lv, allowing users to upload and share up to 2 GB large files, without limiting bandwidth or downloads, storing files for up to 3 months.
- In 2009, users could register an account to get permanent storage space.
- In September 2012, an international version of Files.fm was launched in English and Russian.
- In 2014, online photography print was in collaboration with Latvian company fotki.lv.[3]
- In 2015, the company's stock capital was increased to one million.[4]
- In 2016, photo and file selling functionality was introduced.[5]
- In 2017, Files.fm Backup service received Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association’s (LIKTA) award “Platinum mouse 2017” in the category “Business solutions”.[6]
- In December 2019, Files.fm Token project was accepted in the European commission blockchain technology accelerator “Block.IS”, continuing prototype development and practical experiments. [7]
