Fabian Vogelsteller (German; born in 1984) is a programmer and developer who is best known as one of the Co-Founders of Ethereum and, together with Vitalik Buterin, he proposed the ERC20 token standard[1][2][3][4]. Fabian is currently the Founder and Chief Architect at LUKSO[2]

Personal life

Fabian was born in Germany, and currently lives in Berlin. Fabian obtained a Master's Degree in Fine Arts from the Bauhaus University, Weimar.

Fabian's initial steps as a programmer began at the age of 14. This was still relatively early in the evolution of the Internet, and Vogelsteller began his journey programming in HTML, PHP, ActionScript and JavaScript.

His initial works included Feindura (currently his Twitter handle), a content management system (CMS) that he developed in 2012. The Feindura CMS works based on a series of text files, JavaScript and PHP code, and was recognised for its simplicity and speed, primarily because it does not need a database to function. Fabian intended Feindura to be used on servers with few resources and maintaining a simple construction. To demonstrate its development capabilities, Fabian designed Feindura's official website using its own software.

Career

Ethereum

Fabian was one of the primary contributors to Ethereum from 2015 to 2018, during which time he built the official Ethereum Wallet, the first decentralized web3 Browser and tools like web3.js, the Blockchain spaces most used JavaScript library.

In January 2015, Fabian decided to join the Ethereum Foundation. He began building the first interfaces to interact with smart contracts.

ERC-20 Token Standard

In November 2015, Fabian and Vitalki proposed a Standard set of functions for interacting with token contracts on GitHub[1][3]. This initial proposal developed in to the ERC-20 (Ethereum Request for Comments 20) Token Standard, which propelled the Decentralized finance (DeFi) movement[5]. The ERC-20 is a Token Standard that implements an Application Programming Interface (API) for tokens within Smart Contracts. It provides functionalities such as transferring tokens from one account to another, retrieving the current token balance of an account and also the total supply of the token available on the network[3]. Besides these it also has some other functionalities like to approve that an amount of token from an account can be spent by a third party account[5]. The result of the success of this structure was immediate. The flood of new tokens on the Ethereum network was massive, and Ethereum's gained quick momentum. New start-ups and existing companies alike began to see the value in Ethereum for their technology projects. Although there are now many alternative Blockchains, Ethereum is the largest smart contract platform in terms of market cap, available applications and development activity[6].

EIP-725

In October 2017, Volgesteller proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 725 (together with Tyler Yasaka)[7], which defines a smart contracts based identity management framework where each identity account is a separate smart contract[8]. This supports self-attested claims as well as third-party attestation.

LUKSO

Fabian, together with Marjorie Hernandez, created the LUKSO in 2017. LUKSO is a Blockchain network dedicated to existing and emerging digital lifestyle use cases[9]. LUKSO is running with a Casper consensus algorithm (PoS) combined with an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) execution engine[9].

Fabian, Marjorie and Steffen Sieler published the LUKSO Whitepaper: Blueprint for the New Creative Economies in February 2020.
