FIABCI, the International Real Estate Federation, is a worldwide business networking organization for all stakeholders associated with the real estate industry including agents, developers, brokers, architects, local and public authorities, investors, financial institutions, associations and academia.[1][2]

History

The foundation of FIABCI was envisioned and spearheaded by Pierre Colleville's efforts to create a global organization for real estate professionals. FIABCI was established in 1951, headquartered in Paris, to give access to and create possibilities for those working in the real estate industry interested in learning, exchanging knowledge, and doing business internationally. FIABCI is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact and a member of the International Ethics Standards Coalition. FIABCI also holds the status of a Special Consultative Organization granted by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.[3]

Located in over 70 countries through its 49 national and multinational chapters, FIABCI has developed its network over the past 71 years. Today, FIABCI represents more than 99 associations, 95 academic and public institutions, 2300 regular members, and over 1 million associate members. The FIABCI global partners include Arosa Real Estate, Areaa Global, Acobir, CFBACC, CILA, FIABCI- India & Emirates, Florida Realtors, Miami Realtors, National Association of Realtors, Property Network Partnership, and several others.[4]

The organization hosts various regional and national congresses throughout the year; the members get an opportunity to travel and meet like-minded professionals of the highest caliber from around the world. Over 70 years, FIABCI has successfully held 72 congresses, with its first held in 1948 and the 72nd World Congress held in Paris in 2022.[5]

In 1992, FIABCI launched the first edition of the FIABCI Award for excellence, which was later renamed in 1998 as the FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence Award.[6]

2010 marked the launch of four world councils: the World Council of Brokers, the World Council of Developers/Investors, the World Council of Experts, and the World Council of Managers.

Over the years, FIABCI has also published several notable pieces of research such as A Preliminary Study on World Squatter Conditions (1989), A Preliminary Study on Housing for Senior Citizens (1989), The Property Industry and the Environment (1993), The City We Need Is Affordable Vol I (2016), and The City We Need Is Affordable Vol II (2017).

Global projects

City Prosperity Initiative (CPI) - UN-Habitat and FIABCI executed CPI under the New Urban Agenda and SDGs. It evaluates urban sustainability based on the Perceptions Index (CPI-PI), an online tool to measure a city's inclusiveness, security, resilience, and sustainability using six dimensions: productivity, infrastructural development, quality of life, equity and social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and urban governance.

Affordable Housing - Population growth in the next three decades requires more housing of all types, in more locales, for all income levels. FIABCI has published the best practices it has collected over the years in its series titled The City We Need is Affordable. the series contains four volumes; the latest edition premiered during UN-Habitat World Urban Forum 10 in Abu Dhabi with the topic "Cities of Opportunities: Connecting Culture and Innovation."
