Evelyn Marie Magley (born July 7, 1957) is the first woman to own a professional sports league[1]. She founded The Basketball League (TBL), a professional basketball organization in 2019 at 60 years old with her husband, former NBA basketball player David Magley. Prior to TBL she was the Director of Community Engagement[2] for a professional basketball team in the National Basketball League of Canada.

In March 2023 Magley created The Basketball League Jr[3], a youth initiative, naming her grandsons Blake and Grant Gabou as CEO and President. She is outspoken in her faith as a Christian often mentioning TBL's motto as "Where the Sprit of The Game Lives"[4] in reference to empowering young athletes with financial literacy, community outreach, and life skills[5].

The Basketball League And Growth During COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic The Basketball League tripled in size to 35 teams in 2021[6]. Lindy Waters III played on a TBL team during the pandemic eventually signing a contract with NBA Team[7] Oklahoma City Thunder. In April 2023 David Magley and Evelyn Magley announced the expansion of TBL[8] with the formation of Basketball Super League[9]. The Basketball Super League will have a longer season according to Magley allowing players more games in order to be seen by larger basketball leagues.[10]

Personal Life

Magley was born in Kansas and was a member of the first first girls track team at J.C. Harmon High School in Kansas City, a result of Title IX[11]. Magley was the first Black homecoming queen at J.C. Harmon High School[12]. She attended University of Kansas graduating with a double degree in Music Education and Music Therapy[13].

She is the mother of four college athletes including former tennis standout Jennifer Magley[14].

Evelyn Magley is a frequent keynote speaker[15] sharing on leadership and professional development.
