Dr. Emran Hossain (professor and historian) was a professor at University of Chittagong from 1995, who joined University of Chittagong as a lecturer in 1977. He was born on 30 September 1952 at Chunati, Lohagara, Chattogram. He was a professor of the department of History at the University of Chittagong. After his retirement in 2018, Hossain was serving as a supernumerary professor at University of Chittagong.[1] [2]

Hossain served as the acting vice-chancellor of University of Chittagong for a month in 2013. He also served twice as dean of the arts department at University of Chittagong in 1999 and 2012 respectively. Hossain was chairman of the department of history of University of Chittagong from 2003-2006. [3] He was director of the Chittagong University Museum from 2006-2016. [4] [5] After serving University of Chittagong as a Professor for about four decades, Hossain died at United Hospital, Dhaka on 24 July, 2021.[6] [7] [8] [9]

Education

Hossain passed HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate) exam from Chittagong College in Chattogram, Bangladesh in 1972. He then went on to complete a B. A (Hons) degree (History) and M.A degree (Islamic History and Culture) from University of Chittagong. Later on, he did Ph. D under Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Programme of Bangladesh on Muslim Intelligentsia in Bengal (1905 to 1947).

He was a Fulbright Visitor (Religion in Contemporary American: Church, State, State and Society-2003) US. He was also a nominated member of research board of editors by American Biographical Institute Inc.[10] [11] [12]

Personal life and family

Hossain lived in Chattogram city most of his life in is personal residence. He married Hafsa Akhter in the year 1983 who gave birth to his daughter (Tashmin Emran) in 1985 and his son (Md Ishraq Imran) in 1999 respectively. He remained married to Hafsa Akhter till he died on 24 July, 2021. Hossain's father Late Moulana Noor Hossain was a student of Aliah University in Kolkata before partition of 1947 and was later Principal of the Chunati High School in Chunati, Lohagara, Chattogram.
