Emmabella Rudd (born August 23, 2001) is a type 1 diabetes advocate and activist known for her work in the #insulin4all movement.[1][2]

Early life and education

Emmabella Rudd was born in South Bend, Indiana, where she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 5 at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her family lived in South Bend, Indiana for eight years and Houston, Texas for two years before moving to Sarasota, Florida when she was 10.

Rudd attended Florida State University in 2019 where she majored in public health with a speciality in International affairs. She graduated with a Bachelors of Science in 2022.[3][4] Rudd then began her graduate degree in health policy at Georgetown University and graduated with a Masters of Science in 2023.

Career and activism

Rudd became involved with diabetes advocacy and fundraising shortly after she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. When she was 11, she went to Capitol Hill[5][6][7] with JDRF's Children's Congress to advocate for type 1 diabetes research and legislation in Congress. Rudd has continued to advocate to legislators to garner their support on insulin price regulation,[8] medical supply access, scientific research approvals, and the Special Diabetes Program.[9]

Since 2007, Rudd, with her fundraising team Emmabella's Believers, has raised over $350,000 for diabetes research for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).[10][11]

While at university in Tallahassee, Florida, she began working as the State Lead for Florida's T1International #insulin4all Chapter. Rudd worked with Florida legislators to draft and sponsor legislation to make insulin more affordable in the state.[12] Her advocacy has garnered widespread recognition, earning her features in publications such as CNBC, Le Monde, and USA Today.[13][14][15]

In 2022, she gave a TEDx Talk "Diabetes Isn't a Death Sentence, If You Can Afford It," which captivated audiences and shed light on the critical issue of insulin affordability.[16][17]

Rudd moved to Washington, D.C. in 2022 to begin her Masters at Georgetown University. While in school, Rudd worked for the White House in the Executive Office of The President, as an intern for the Policy Office of Vice President Kamala Harris. Rudd's recent work has pertained to U.S. drug and medical device patent reform,[18][19][20] the Inflation Reduction Act Drug Price Negotiation Program, and federal insulin policy.[21]

Rudd currently works for Booz Allen Hamilton in health policy.

Awards and achievements

Emmabella Rudd was honored with the Diana Award in 2021,[22][23][24][25] named a Truman Scholar Finalist in 2022,[26] chosen as a Girls Nation delegate in 2018, selected as Miss South Tallahassee USA in 2021, and awarded the Anne Frank Humanitarian Award in 2018.[27]
