Eloise Alexandra Lamb (born 26 September 1999), known professionally as Eloise, is an English singer and songwriter. She rose to prominence after her rendition of Bruno Major's "Second Time" went viral on Instagram in 2017, subsequently joining Major on his US headline tour. In 2019, she released her debut EP This Thing Called Living, which garnered support from Billie Eilish and has been streamed over 25 million times. Her mini-album Somewhere In Between was released in June 2021.

Early Life

Eloise grew up in rural Normandy, France, where she was raised bilingual, without internet and with little access to television beyond French cartoons and old recordings of classic Hollywood musicals.[1] She became absorbed by her parents' diverse record collections, which ranged from Jim Croce, Eagles (band) and Joni Mitchell to the musicals of Steven Sondheim and Gilbert and Sullivan, and took piano lessons and sang in a choir.[2] By her early teens, she had moved back to London and was teaching herself guitar by looking up songs on YouTube and mimicking the chord shapes she saw.[3]

Eloise had initially planned on pursuing an acting career and landed a leading role in the 2012 British coming-of-age drama film Broken (2012 film). After overhearing her sing on set, director Rufus Norris suggested she contribute to the soundtrack, sparking her passion for music and singing. She recounts: "I realised that this is the stuff that feeds me; this is why I'm here on Earth. And from then on it was like, oh so I'm not going to act, I'm going to be a musician. It was really clear."[2]

Career

2017-2020: Career Beginnings & This Thing Called Living

At the age of 17, Eloise began posting acoustic cover versions to Instagram. Within days of posting her rendition of Bruno Major's "Second Time", Major himself reached out and invited her to duet at his upcoming London show.[4] Impressing at the gig, Eloise was subsequently invited to join Major on his US headline tour and a UK arena tour with Sam Smith, contributing keyboards and backing vocals as part of Major's band.[5]

Eloise's debut EP, This Thing Called Living, followed in 2019, and has since been streamed more than 25 million times.[6] The EP received support from Billie Eilish, who took to Instagram to cover "Left Side" and "Subside".[7] Eloise describes "Left Side" as being about "having to make yourself get your head around the fact that, if you push through the heart ache, you WILL be okay. And that acknowledgment in itself is hard to accept but it’s crucial to survival. I’ve never regretted having my heart broken. It’s the reason I now know how to love better than I ever have before."[8]

2021-present: Somewhere In-Between

On 12 February 2021, Eloise released the single "Hungover". Robin Ferris from The Line Of Best Fit described the track as "an enticing showcase of Eloise's raw talent - a woozy, intoxicating bop that shimmers with an irresistible, tremolo-drenched vocal effect as the backdrop. Eloise's leads manage to soar, mumble and croon in all the right moments."[9]

On 16 April 2021, Eloise released her next single "Intertwined" and announced her mini-album Somewhere In-Between. Third single "Who's She" was released on 21 May 2021, which Eloise wrote after coming back from a tour having broken up with her first boyfriend: "I felt disoriented because I came home to find that my life, the way I knew it, had gone and I had to carve myself a new one. [...] This song is for the people who feel they’ve lost touch with themselves. The hopeful thing is that the acknowledgement of that means you’re one step closer to finding yourself again."[3]

Somewhere In-Between was released on 18 June 2021 to critical acclaim, entirely composed and written by Eloise and produced by Major. She described the experience of writing the record as "emotional and cathartic", noting: "It's going to be uncomfortable shedding an old skin because you're exposing new parts of yourself to a world that you know nothing about. But progress and growth only happens one step outside of your comfort zone, so I've learned to be more fearless."[10]

The Line Of Best Fit praised the album, writing: "Befitting a personal introspection, or quite simply soundtracking laidback nights with mates, Somewhere In-Between is indeed living somewhere in-between the consciousness and subconsciousness as only a deft songwriter could manifest."[9]

Ones To Watch praised the release as a "delightfully dreamy escape that the romantics among us will be sure to devour". Earmilk commended its "notes of classic rock, R&B, jazz and classics that we associate with the time of Hollywood's golden age."[11]

In September 2021, Eloise announced she would be supporting London Grammar on their UK arena tour in October and November. She played her first UK headline tour in November 2021, and will embark on European and North American headline dates in January and February 2022.
