Duffel Technologies Ltd is a travel technology company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. Duffel primarily provides search, booking, pricing, payments and other processing services for flights in real-time to travel sellers through its Flights API and Payments API.

History

Duffel was founded in 2017 by Steve Domin and Tom Bates. The founders previously worked together as early employees at GoCardless in engineering and design, respectively.[1]

Duffel was created when Steve set out to launch a weekend getaway generator and found that accessing inventory for travel supplies such as hotels, flights, and car rentals was difficult. Duffel was intended as an alternative to a larger Global Distribution System (GDS) to level the playing field for new types of travel sellers.[2]

The London-based start-up, nicknamed the “Stripe for Travel”, aimed to simplify the process for individual travel agencies, large online travel agencies and travel management companies and improve the overall travel experience for end-users.[3]

From 2018-2019, Duffel raised $56.2 million in funding from Index Ventures[4], Kima Ventures[5], Blossom Capital[6], Benchmark[7], and Y Combinator.[8]

In November 2020, Duffel expanded operations to the United States with an office in New York.[9][10][11][12][13][14]

In summer 2021, Duffel announced its 25th direct airline connection expanding access to Low-cost carrier(LCC) inventory alongside New Distribution Capability (NDC) content.[15][16][17][18][19]

In November 2021, Duffel announced an agreement with GDS supplier, Travelport to provide travel sellers with access to 300+ airlines[20] across the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.[21]

Flights API

The Duffel Flights API gives merchants access to 300+ airlines around the world.[20]

In 2021, Duffel announced “self-serve”, aimed at broadening the ecosystem, streamlining processes, and reducing integration time.[44][45][46][47]

The Duffel Flights API is used by businesses such as Alternative Airlines[24][25][26][27], Pelikin[28][29][30][31], and BizAway.[32][33][34][35]

Payments API

The Duffel Payments API allows travel sellers to charge their customers for flights and ancillaries directly through the API and add a markup to bookings.[48]

Duffel announced the launch of Duffel Payments in January 2022 as a payments product for the travel industry, powered by Stripe.[49]

Duffel Payments enables travel sellers to charge their customers without the need for upfront capital. Duffel Payments includes that ability to add a mark-up to fares or bundle travel products together such as flights and travel insurance.[50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61][62]

It supports 135+ currencies and all major credit cards.[48]

Funding

Duffel was started in 2017 and has raised $56.2M. Duffel was part of the Y Combinator Summer 2018 cohort.[8] In August 2018, Duffel raised its seed round of $4.7 million from Blossom, Index, Kima Ventures and Y Combinator.[63][64]

In June 2019, Duffel announced a Series A round of $21.5 million. The funding round was led by Blossom Capital and included Index, Kima Ventures and Y Combinator.[65][66][67][68][69][70]

In October 2019, Duffel raised a $30 million Series B with continued investment from former backers Blossom, Index, and Kima Ventures, along with Benchmark joining as a new investor.[71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79]
