Dr. Sunil Kumar K. is an Indian-born entrepreneur, author, and financial technology expert. He is the co-founder and managing director at SAM Corporate,[1] a niche fintech consulting company head-quartered in Dubai.[2][3]

Dr. Kumar is an expert in ESG, Corporate Performance Management (CPM), Asset-Liability Management (ALM), Market Risk (MR), Credit Risk (CR), Basel regulations, Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process (ICAAP), and Islamic banking.[4] He has co-authored the book Financial Risk Management for Islamic Banking and Finance.[5][6]

Biography

Dr. Kumar is an alumnus of IIT Bombay and holds an MBA in finance from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia.

In 2014, Dr. Sunil co-founded SAM Corporate, a niche fintech consulting company based in Dubai, UAE. SAM Corporate provides financial management solutions, including budgeting, forecasting, risk management, corporate performance management, and compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), in addition to ESG Solution. The company is ISO 9001:2015, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, and ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 certified and operates globally, with offices in the UAE, UK, Spain, and India. The company focuses on helping organizations streamline their financial processes and enhance their risk management strategies. In 2022, the company received investment from marque investors, Mr. Ramesh Ramakrishnan of Transworld and Mr. Sanjay Teli.[7][8][9]

Under Dr. Sunil’s leadership, SAM Corporate has developed its flagship product SAMESG®, an in-house ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance)[10][11] reporting and materiality assessment software. SAMESG® has been recognized as the best ESG platform at the CSR Leadership Summit & Awards 2024. Notable clients include insurance companies and business enterprises across the manufacturing, healthcare, and real estate industries.[12]

In 2024, SAM Corporate partnered with FICO, to use its decision science tools to design softwares to advance the decision making capabilities of financial services and insurance businesses. Over the years, the company has grown to become "one of the most renowned powerhouses of FinTech Expertise"[13][14][15]

Before co-founding SAM Corporate in 2014, Dr. Sunil held several significant positions in the financial services sector, including roles at the Emirates Institute of Finance, IRIS integrated risk management ag, Switzerland, Wolters Kluwer Financial Services, FRSGlobal,[16] RiskCons FZE, and Tagetik Middle East. At FRS Global, Dr. Sunil provided consultancy for Regulatory reporting for BFSI clients. He was also appointed as the co-regional director of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) in Dubai and held the position for over seven years. During the "Liquidity Risk Management in UAE" forum in Dubai on April 15, 2009, Dr. Kumar stressed the need to distinguish between collective actions of banks and their individual liquidity management efforts. He al;so discusses how simultaneous selling of illiquid assets or liquidity hoarding by all banks could harm systemic liquidity.[17][18][19][20]

As Head of Training and Research at Emirates Institute for Finance, UAE, Dr. Sunil co-authored a research paper on "Risks in Large Value Payment Systems," discussing the critical role of Large Value Payment Systems (LVPS) in financial markets and the associated risks.[21][22][23]

Dr. Sunil has served as a chief strategist and architect to the Ministry of Health, UAE and has received highest recognition for contributing to the Digitalization of Health Services in UAE. He was also the head of Risk Management Middle East for IRIS Integrated Risk Management AG, Switzerland, overseeing brand building, consultancy, projects, and operations in the Middle East.

Dr. Sunil has co-authored the book Financial Risk Management for Islamic Banking and Finance,[24][25] published by Palgrave McMillan UK. The book, which is a best seller, addresses critical issues and strategies for managing financial risks within Islamic financial institutions and is one of the pioneering works in the field of Islamic Risk Management. He is also the contributing author to the book “Euromoney Encyclopedia of Islamic Finance (2012).”

He is known for developing the Khaled Khandelwal (KK) Model for the Rating of Islamic Financial Institutions. Among several research papers, one he wrote with Khaled Aljifri, titled "Financial Contracts in Conventional and Islamic Financial Institutions: An Agency Theory Perspective,"[26][27] published in the Review of Business and Finance Studies. The study examined the differences in stakeholder relationships such as those between managers and shareholders and between shareholders and debt holders within the conventional and Islamic financial institutions. He has also been involved in various seminars and conferences and has delivered over two hundred risk management training programs. In July 2024, Dr. Sunil delivered a keynote speech at the NGI Social Foundation CSR Leadership Summit & Awards 4.0 in Hyderabad emphasizing the importance of proactive strategies for safeguarding the Sustainable future.[28]
