Dr. Muhunthan Thillai is a British physician, researcher, entrepreneur, and author, specializing in respiratory and general medicine, with a particular focus on sarcoidosis and lung fibrosis.[1] Dr. Thillai is a consultant chest physician at Royal Papworth and Addenbrooke's hospitals. He is the co-founder and CEO of Qureight, a medical technology company leveraging AI to advance the understanding and treatment of complex diseases.[2]

Dr. Thillai is also an associate professor at the University of East Anglia. He has co-authored five books and numerous research papers on lung diseases such as hypersensitivity pneumonitis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and sarcoidosis.[3]

Early life and education

Thillai was born in Sri Lanka and grew up in Jersey, Channel Islands. Both of his parents were doctors who immigrated to the United Kingdom in the 1980s.

Thillai completed his undergraduate education in 1999 with a BA in Medical Journalism from the University of Westminster. He earned his MBBS degree from Imperial College London in 2002 and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2005. He pursued a PhD in immunology and proteomics at Imperial College London, completing it in 2012. Additionally, he received a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Respiratory and General Medicine in 2015.

Career

Thillai began his medical training as a junior doctor in London and Oxford. He was the Infectious Diseases Fellow for the Map of Medicine project at NHS Connecting for Health and served as Editor-in-Chief of Junior Dr magazine. He received a Research Training Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust.[4]

His clinical training included specializations in lung cancer, pulmonary vascular disorders, and lung transplantation. Thillai is a consultant chest physician at Royal Papworth and Addenbrooke's hospitals. He also serves as co-chair of the 2020 British Thoracic Society guidelines for sarcoidosis.[5]

In August 2020, Thillai co-founded Qureight, a medical technology company based in Cambridge. Qureight specializes in data curation using advanced AI to explore new trial endpoints for complex diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, and pulmonary hypertension. The company's platform assists in structuring image and biomarker data from biopharmaceutical and healthcare institutions. Its clients include pharmaceutical companies such as Roche, Galapagos, and Takeda. Recently, Qureight secured £1.5 million in seed funding led by Playfair Capital.[6]

Dr. Thillai is also a medical researcher, having authored several research papers on sarcoidosis. He has co-authored five books and several book chapters. Dr. Thillai has also presented at various international scientific conferences.[7]
