Dr. Monica Patel (born November 20, 1976) is a Houston-based cardiologist specialized in prevention of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular imaging including echocardiography,[1] vascular imaging,[2] nuclear imaging, and cardiac PET scans.[3][4][5]
Early life and education
Dr. Patel was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Bipin and Hema Patel. Her father is Gujarati her mother is Maharashtrian. She grew up in Houston after her parents moved to the area in 1978. Monica completed high school at Elsik High School in Alief in 1995.
In 1999, Dr. Patel received her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry at Houston Baptist University as an Endowed Academic Scholar. Thereafter, she received her doctorate at the University of Texas Medical Branch medical school in 2003. Soon after, she completed her Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology Fellowship at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth.
Career
Dr. Patel is a quadruple board-certified cardiologist who has spent her entire career serving the Houston community.[6][7] As a physician, she is affiliated with Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital.[8][9][10]
Dr. Patel is also an associate professor and the co-program director of the cardiology fellowship at the McGovern medical school at UTHealth.[11] In June 2012, she joined the PET center as a co-investigator of the CENTURY Health study at the Weatherhead PET Center, which aims to prevent and reverse coronary heart disease.[12]
In December 2019, Dr. Patel was invited to give her first international lecture in Taiwan on cardiac PET scans entitled "Role of Coronary Flow Reserve and PET Imaging in Revascularization Decision Making." She was also invited to speak on cardiac PET imaging via Zoom at the Nigerian Cardiovascular Symposium in 2020. In 2021, she became the assistant director of the PET imaging and training center.[13]
Dr. Patel is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nuclear Cardiology, and Echocardiography.
Awards
Dr. Patel was honored with the Dean's Teaching Excellence Award consecutively from 2014 to 2022. She has also been featured in the Top Doctors Cardiologist list of 2021 and Continental Who's Who, 2021.
Dr. Patel has also been a winner at the Dancing with the Houston Stars event at the APAHA gala in 2016.

Philanthropy
Dr. Patel is a philanthropist who participates in local and national events conducted by the Asian Pacific American Heritage Association, Operation Smile, Children At Risk, Homemade Hope, and the Arts of Healing.[14] In addition, she has volunteered on medical mission trips through Faith in Practice in Guatemala, where she provided basic care for underserved communities.[15]
Personal life
Dr. Patel is married to Calvin Krall. The two met in November 2017 and had been dating since February 2018. They got engaged in Bali in December 2019 and finally tied the knot in November 2020. The couple lives with a fur baby; a Bichon Frise named Lucky.[16][17]
Dr. Patel remains committed to lifelong learning and strives to use her platform to promote health and well-being for all by self-care for the mind, body, and soul. Her top self-care activities include meditation, good sleep hygiene, plant based diet, aerobic exercise for at least 150 minutes per week, connecting with nature, walking her dog, and spending time with loved ones.[18][19]
