Devin Denzel Davidson (born February 25, 1991), better known by his stage name Devin The Ripper, is an American rapper from Southern Maryland. He is known for his powerful voice and lyrical storytelling and his 2021 songs “What A Day" and “Hustle SZN II”.
Early life
Devin Davidson was born in Silver Spring, Maryland on February 25, 1991. His father Rare Essence ‘Footz’ Davidson was a founder and the drummer for the well renowned Go-Go band Rare Essence. Davidson suffered a string of casualties in his childhood as his father was murdered in 1994 and his older brother, Quentin ‘Lil Footz’ Davidson Jr. was murdered in 1999. His father’s case remains unsolved. Davidson spent most of his early childhood in Clinton, Maryland and moved to Waldorf, Maryland while in the 5th grade where he would graduate from Westlake High School (Maryland)|Westlake High School. He attended Bowie State University and graduated Spring 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. While in college, he joined the theatre program and discovered his passion for acting. This led to his subsequent move to Los Angeles in 2016. After spending 3 years LA, Davidson tried his hand at rapping and decided to move back to the DMV (region) to reside in Southeast (Washington, D.C.).[1]
Musical career
Davidson found his style as an artist while living in Washington Highlands (Washington, D.C.), the same neighborhood his father rose to musical prominence. On August 21, 2020, Davidson released his debut mixtape ‘One Day It’ll Make Cents’ under his label Lee Mack Entertainment. He released a total of 4 projects including; ‘I Am Who I Say I Am’, ‘Rap Snax’, and ‘No Flights to Waldorf (Based On A True Story)’.
Reception
Despite his late entry into the music scene at the age of 28, Devin The Ripper quickly gained notoriety as one of the DMV’s most lyrically inclined.The Media Prince has said "With a heavy love for hip-hop, [Devin The Ripper embodies] everything necessary to leave his mark on the game. Exemplifying the DMV in everything he does he has become a vital asset in the makeup of the DMV music scene. With his wit and amazing lyrical skills, he is well on his way to being superstar in the world of music entertainment and business.”[2] Jane's James wrote "Four projects Devin's audience only continues to expand as he breaks barriers for DMV talent."[3] Of Devin The Ripper's debut album, Rap Fiesta writes "...he pours all his emotions into even the smallest of details on 'One Day It'll Make Cents'."[4]
