Devika Bhushan is an Indian-American pediatrician, public health professional, and mental health activist. She served as California's Acting Surgeon General in 2022.[1][2][3]

Education

Bhushan earned a BA with research Honors in Neuroscience and Behavior from Columbia University, graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She earned an MD at Harvard Medical School and undertook a general pediatrics residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Bloomberg Children’s Center and is Board-certified in General Pediatrics, with an active medical license in California.[3][4][5][6]

Career

As California’s Acting Surgeon General (2022),[2] Dr. Bhushan served as a key public health spokesperson and advisor to California Governor Gavin Newsom.[7][8] She led policy and practice innovation at a statewide level, co-crafting and launching the $500 million ACEs Aware initiative in California, focused on healing from childhood adversity and enhancing health equity for millions.[9][10][7][8]

Dr. Bhushan has also served on Stanford’s faculty, as a health equity researcher, and now serves as a senior advisor to entities advancing health and equity, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness's national Board of Directors.[7] Dr. Bhushan's areas of clinical, policy, and research expertise are health and gender equity; trauma-informed systems; stress, health, and resilience; and mental health.[7][8] Her work has been published in The Lancet,[11] Pediatrics,[12] The Los Angeles Times,[13] and National Public Radio.[14]

Dr. Bhushan is an award-winning mental health activist,[15] having shared her journey with bipolar disorder publicly while serving as California's acting Surgeon General in 2022 to help destigmatize mental illness and promote healing.[13][14][16] In 2023, she launched a podcast to destigmatize mental illness, Spread the light with Dr Devika B [17] and a newsletter focused on evidence-based tools for well-being, Ask Dr Devika B.[18]

Personal life

Dr. Devika Bhushan grew up in three countries: India, the United States, and the Philippines. She is an immigrant and a first-generation American.[7][8]

She is the daughter of public health experts Indu Bhushan (health economist and inaugural CEO of Ayushman Bharat) and Anjana Bhushan (expert in gender, equity, and human rights).[3][19][20][21]

Dr. Devika Bhushan is married to entrepreneur Ashish Kundra.[22] They have one son: Rumi Kundra-Bhushan (born 2021).
