Derrick Belcham[1] is a Canadian independent filmmaker and theatre director best known for directing The Take Away Shows,[2][3] Juliana Barwick: Nebula, Otis Walks Into The Woods and The Antlers: Hotel.[4][5]
Career
Belcham's first contribution to La Blogotheque's Take Away Show series, a web and television series focusing on musicians presenting their works in raw and personal settings, was an intimate performance by Wilco at L'Olympia Theatre in Montreal, QC, in March of 2010. Belcham's collaboration with La Blogotheque[6] would lead to him collaborating on more than 75 entries, with artists such as Courtney Barnett, Sharon Van Etten, Thurston Moore, Spoon,[7][8] Perfume Genius,[9] Neko Case,[10] Weyes Blood,[11] and many others.[12]
Belcham received a Graham Foundation[13] award in 2013 for a video series he made with musicians Julianna Barwick, Liz Harris, Bill Orcutt, and curator Jordan Stein at the Philip Johnson Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut.[14]
In 2016, Belcham collaborated on a filmed improvisation at the Philip Johnson Glass House[15] with Ryuichi Sakamoto[16] and Carten Nicolai, the audio recording of which became Sakamoto's "Glass" piece,[17] released on NOTON in September. In the same year, Belcham began working with choreographer Emily Terndrup on a series of multidisciplinary performances titled "The Wilder Papers," "Debut," and "Fable" at the Knockdown Center,[18] combining the compositions of Bing & Ruth, Julianna Barwick,[19] Blonde Redhead, and Hannah Epperson with a team of dancers and actors to create evening-length immersive theatre works.[20]
Belcham created narrative music videos for artists like Colin Stetson,[21] Julianna Barwick, Mary Lattimore, Dave Gahan,[22] The Antlers, Marissa Nadler, My Brightest Diamond, Basia Bulat,[23] Trixie Whitley, and Yamantaka Sonic Titan over the next five years,[24] which were featured on Pitchfork,[25][26][27] Rolling Stone,[28] NME,[29][30][31] and other notable sites.
"At Noon Fell A Darkness," a poetic depiction of Icelandic artists and poets moving into the near-endless darkness of an Icelandic winter, was Belcham's first feature-length documentary, released in 2020.
"Green To Gold,"[32] Belcham's second feature-length dance film, was released in 2021 and follows Bobbi-Jene Smith, Or Schraiber, and their daughter Dea as they relocate to a rural farm in upstate New York and traverse the dramatic changes of a tumultuous relationship. The soundtrack for the film is composed of songs from the Antlers' album "Green To Gold."[33][34]
Belcham has collaborated with modern classical composers such as Noveller, Tristen Krasten Krause, and Brendon Randall-Myers[35] on a number of experimental light-based films throughout the years, in addition to his narrative and performance-oriented films.[36][37]
