Goyal won the Economic Times Startup of the Year award in 2014 and was selected as a finalist for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2023.[2][3]

Early life and education

Goyal was born on January 26, 1983, in Muktsar, Punjab, India. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, with an M.Tech. in Mathematics and Computing in 2005.

Career

After graduating from IIT Delhi, Goyal began his career as a senior associate consultant at Bain and Company in January 2006. During his time at Bain, Goyal, along with his colleague Pankaj, conceptualized the idea for Zomato, inspired by the inconvenience of queuing for food orders.[4] Their initial project, a food ordering website for Bain employees, proved successful, leading to the establishment of Zomato in 2008.[5]

Zomato, initially named Foodiebay, is an Indian multinational restaurant aggregator and food delivery company. It operates as a platform connecting customers, restaurant partners, and delivery partners.[6] Over the years, Zomato has expanded globally, operating in approximately 22 countries and offering comprehensive restaurant information, menu details, pricing, and reviews.[7]

Under Goyal's leadership, Zomato has grown its global presence through strategic acquisitions, including Gastronauci in Poland, Cibando in Italy, and Blinkit (formerly Grofers) in India.[8]

In addition to his role at Zomato, Goyal has invested in various startups, including Mainstreet, Gabit, Therado, Shiprocket, Blinkit,[9] Bira 91, HyperTrack, TerraDo, ChefKart, SquadStack, and Unacademy, among others. Goyal is also a shark on Shark Tank India Season 3, which premiered on January 22, 2024.[10][11]
