Debra Bricker Balken is a scholar, writer and curator who works on subjects relating to American modernism and contemporary art. A dual citizen of Canada and the United States, she pursued her education in Art History at the University of British Columbia,[1] the University of Edinburgh and the University of Chicago.[2] In addition to her numerous publications, exhibitions, articles and essays, Balken has taught at Brown University, the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, Williams College, Mount Holyoke College, and the Rhode Island School of Design.[2] She is a frequent lecturer at museums, universities, and colleges internationally.[3]

She has curated and written catalogues for exhibitions featuring artists such as Barbara Takenaga[4], Mark Tobey[5][6], John Marin[7], John Storrs[8], Arthur Dove, Georgia O’Keefe,[9] Edna Andrade[10], and Philip Guston[11].

Awards

Balken’s work on the exhibition Dove/O'Keefe: Circles of Influence at the Clark Art Institute earned the honor of the 2009 Best Thematic Show Nationally from the International Art Critics Association (AICA/USA).[18] In 2018, the book Philip Guston: Nixon Drawings, 1971 & 1975 that Balken contributed to won the FILAF d’OR for Modern Art award from the FILAF International Art Book and Film Festival.[19]

She has also participated in several grants and fellowships such as the Visiting Clark Fellowship at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.[20]
