Davide Manuli (April 11, 1967) is an Italian screenwriter, actor, producer, and film director.[1][2][3] He is best known for The Legend of Kaspar Hauser, Beket,[4] Girotondo, tour around the world, and Vitalic: Hans Is Driving. Davide is known for playing the roles of an attorney in ‘In Your Hands’; a drug addict in Girotondo, tour around the world; Anton Manescu in The Contenders; and the role of Beppo in the movie The Enchanted April.

Manuli is also the founder of his own production company, Shooting Hope Productions.

Early life and education

Manuli was born in the Italian city of Milan. He moved to New York in 1987 to pursue acting. Davide studied at the Actors Studio and the Lee Strasberg Institute. He later became the personal assistant of acting coach Charlie Laughton for Al Pacino’s Chal Productions in New York.

Career

Manuli started his career as an actor in 1991, playing the role of Beppo in the film "The Enchanted April," followed by his leading role as Anton Menescu in the film "The Contenders." The movie went on to win the Best Comedy award at the WorldFest Houston Festival. He produced, wrote, and shot his first feature film "Girotondo, tour around the world" in 1998. In 2005, Davide opened his own production company, "Shooting Hope Productions."[5]

In 2006, Manuli wrote, directed, and produced a documentary on the Inuit population in Nunavut titled “Unheard-of!’ !’ who was in Competition for the Première at the Turin Film Festival.[6] In the subsequent year, Davide played the role of a lawyer in Peter Del Monte’s feature ‘In Your Hands’ which also saw its premiere at the Turin Film Festival.[7][8]

In 2008, Davide produced his second feature film, ‘Beket’,[9] which was honored with the Independent Critics Award at the Locarno Film Festival. His third feature film, "The Legend of Kaspar Hauser," starring Vincent Gallo, and Silvia Calderoni made its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival. The movie also won a special mention at the Geneva Film Festival in 2012 as well as the Jury Award at the San Francisco Indie Fest in 2013.

In 2012, Davide started a crowdfunding campaign[10] for a new independent feature film titled “Haiku”, starring American rebel director Abel Ferrara as the leading actor. He also wrote the screenplay for the feature film Lucania, produced in collaboration with Rai Cinema.[11]

Davide’s work was also reflected in fashion stylist Ana Locking’s[12] new collection “Kaspar Hauser” and in the new videoclip of italian rapper Myss Keta[13] “Giovanna Hardcore”, which is inspired by the same movie, The Legend of Kaspar Hauser. Manuli is currently working on a new surreal version of the Don Quixote tale, titled "Don Quixote 3000". His other notable works include Unheard-of, A Pack of Smokes, Raver Eolica, and Bombay-Arthur Road Prison, where he has fulfilled the roles of a producer and writer.[14]

Awards

Manuli won the VELA d’ORO at the Bellaria Film Festival for the short film "Bombay”. He also won the Premio Solinas for Best Original Italian Screenplay in 1995.

In 2006 he was nominated for best Italian documentary film for “Unheard-of!” at the Turin Film festival.

Manuli was nominated for the Golden Leopard-Filmmakers of the Present award at the Locarno International Film Festival 2008. He won the Cutting the Edge Award (Special Mention) at the Miami Film Festival in 2009. Manuli’s ‘Girotondo, tour around the world’ won the Fuji Grand Prix-Best Film of the Year award.

In 2012 “Girotondo, around the world” was invited at Venice Days section in Venice for a special screening in a Director’s Cut version.[15][16]

Books

Manuli wrote the book "My inability to be in the world" in 1995, which was published by Kaos Communication. In 2014, Davide was named in the book "10 Directors Outside the Screens", published by the Italian publishing house Uzak Mobile Characters. In 2015 he wrote the comics the book “La Leggenda di Kaspar Hauser” together with cartoonist Gianluca Sigurani published with Il Saggiatore.[17][18][19]
