Dashamaa Vrat

Dashamaa vrat is an annual 10 days vrat/fasting mainly observed in Gujarat.[1] This vrat usually observed in July/August on the amavasya of Ashadha month.[2] The vrat is dedicated to Dashamaa or Momai Maa.[3] Anyone could take this vrat however mainly, married women take this vrat to bring prosperity and good fortune in their family.[4]

Description

There is a legend to the vrat. There was a king who was Arrogant, however his wife who was spiritual and a believer in religious. Once, she saw a group of women performing rituals at a river bank near the palace. The queen called out her maid and asked her what they were doing. The maid went and was informed that they have took Dashamaa’s vrat, as hearing this, she asked all the rituals and went back to tell the queen. The queen started the vrat however the King was not happy and told her to stop doing it. By this, Goddess Dashamaa became angry and created the king’s misfortune. Thus, he lost his kingdom, his gift became stones, flowers in the garden became dried and also lost his two sons. He was locked in a jail by a nearby city’s king. In jail, he realises his mistake and started the vrat in jail. By the devotion of the king and queen, Dashamaa was again happy and returned their kingdom back.[5]

Vrat

On the amavasya of Ashadh month, devotees take Dashamaa vrat by installing a Sandhani made with Raw soil in their homes. devotees can also put a photo or a murti of Dashamaa next to it. Devotees who take this vrat wear the thread that had 10 knots on their right hand on the first day and eat once in a day (ek tanu).[6] Everyday, devotees perform puja, Aarti, reads katha and then eats prasadi. Devotees also do Jagaran.[7] This vrat lasts for 10 days and on the last days, around 4-5 AM, the murti is immersed into the river or water.[8][9][10]
