Darian Alexander Shirazi (Persian language|Persian: داریان شیرازی‎, born December 23, 1986) is an entrepreneur, angel investor, and venture capitalist. He currently serves as General Partner at Gradient Ventures[1],Google's AI-focused[2] venture fund[3]. Previously, he founded Radius. At age 19, he became the first intern hired by Facebook[4].

Career

Shirazi was born in 1986 in Stanford, California to Iranian-American parents and grew up in Atherton, California. He is the only child of Sharam and Susanne Pari Shirazi. His father is a serial entrepreneur, known for his involvement with the founding of Zilog[5][6] and TIBCO Software|TIBCO Software in the 1980s. His mother is a published fiction author[7] and recurring op-ed columnist[8]. His grandparents founded the Alborz Investment Company prior to the Iranian Revolution which was later nationalized causing his broader family to relocate to the United States in the late 1970s. He is related to Dara Khosrowshahi|Dara and Hassan Khosrowshahi[9].

At the age of 15, Shirazi interned at eBay as a software test engineer working on various features. In 2005, he joined Facebook as the company's first intern and reported to Mark Zuckerberg. After three years delaying matriculation to the University of California, Berkeley to work at Facebook, Shirazi left Facebook and spent two years months studying Philosophy and Computer Science at Berkeley. In 2010 he dropped out of school to pursue a career in startups. He first advised the founding team at Udemy and became one of the first investors in the company. He is also an early investor in a number of significant companies including Palantir, Carbon Health, Lyft, Osaro, DoorDash, and many others[10].

In 2012 he founded Radius which raised $80MM of venture capital and served Fortune 500 customers worldwide[11]. In 2019, Radius was acquired by Kabbage[12] which was subsequently acquired by American Express for $850MM[13].

In 2019 he joined Gradient Ventures, Google's AI-focused venture fund, as General Partner[14]. He has since led Seed and Series A investments in dozens of startups. In 2013, he was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30[15].
