Danielle Stella is an American woman who unsuccessfully ran in the Republican Party (United States) for the Us house of representatives seat in the 5th Congressional District of Minnesota in 2020.

During her campaign, Stella achieved international media attention by being arrested twice, having an open warrant and then for Twitter permanently banning her campaign account for posts about Democratic Ilhan Omar.[1][2]

Background

According to Stella's campaign website, she is a "special education professional" who has spent her career teaching children with autism. The website described her as an "ardent Christian".[3] In 2009, Stella was arrested for DWI and fleeing a police officer. In court, she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge.[2]

On January 8th, 2019, Stella was arrested at a Target Corporation store in Edina, Minnesota. She was charged with stealing over $2300 in merchandise. Stella told police at the time that she suffers from Ptsd and did not remember anything after arriving at the store.[2]

On April 4, 2019 a Bench Warrant a bench was issued for Stella's arrest after she failed to appear at a court hearing for the shoplifting charge at Target.[2]

On April 28, 2019, Stella was detained by police in Bloomington, Minnesota for alleged theft at a Cub Foods store. At that point, they discovered her warrant out of Bloomington and arrested her.[2]

Political controversy

In November, 2019, Stella's official campaign Twitter account published a tweet about Omar: "If it is proven @IlhanMN passed sensitive info to Iran, she should be tried for #treason and hanged". A second tweet was linked to an article displaying a meme of a stick figure being hanged. [4] On November 26, 2019, the day after these two tweets were published, Twitter suspended the account.[1]

On August 11, 2020, Stella was defeated in the Republican Party primary by Lacy Johnson, 77% to 19%. [5]
