Donald "Daniel" Fergusson (Scottish Gaelic: Dòmhnall Fearghasan, September 11, 1805 - April 20, 1887) was a Scottish poet and early New Zealand school teacher. Fergusson composed poetry in English, Scots and Gaelic [1].
Early Life
Donald "Daniel" Fergusson was born in Logierait, Perthshire to Alexander Fergusson and Isabel Fergusson (née Campbell). He attended St Andrews University and spent 40 years as a schoolmaster throughout Scotland. He married Catherine Fergusson (née Anderson) on the 9th of September 1834. They had fourteen children. [2][3][4]
Fergusson was a well-known Gaelic poet, having been awarded Queen Victoria's prize for Gaelic poetry three times during her visits to Scotland [1]. Fergusson's success angered the rival Highland poets so much so the Gaelic Society banned him from entering further competitions after commissioning a collection of his poems entitled "A' Bhan-Kigh Aig Blar an Adhall. Prize Gaelic Poems of Atholl Gathering 1844 and 1845". This included the prize-winning Comhchruinneach Fir Adhall a Dhfhailteach ’na Ban-righ ann an Dun-chailinn sa Bhliadhna 1842 (English: Gathering of the Atholl Men to Welcome the Queen to Dunkeld in the Year 1842) and A Bhan-righ aig Blàr an Adhall, am Mios Medhonach an Fhoghair 1844 (English: The Queen in Blair Atholl, in the Middle Month of Autumn 1844) [1][5]. His poems explored the Queen's presence and the Highland identity following the Jacobite Rising|Jacobite Risings [6].
Emigration to New Zealand
The Fergusson family arrived in Lyttleton aboard the Creswell in 1859 [7]. The family briefly settled in Kaipoi where he became one of the first schoolmasters in the district, before moving to Temuka. Fergusson opened the first school in George Town, Arowhenua in 1882 teaching and taking borders [1]. He was also appointed Clerk to the first Temuka Road Board [1].
Fergusson died in Geraldine on April 20, 1887 from syncope [1].
