Dan Keeling is an English wine and food writer, restaurateur and wine importer and who co-owns Noble Rot magazine and restaurants, and wine merchants Keeling Andrew & Co. Keeling formerly worked in A&R, signing the band Coldplay.[1]
A&R career
Following his time as a scout at A&M records, Keeling joined Parlophone Records in the late nineties where he worked his way up to become head of A&R.[1] Keeling signed Coldplay to Parlophone Records in April 1999,[2] and the liner notes of their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, state “The Scientist is Dan”.[3] He also signed several other artists who have attained number one bestselling albums including Athlete and Lily Allen at Parlophone, and Bombay Bicycle Club at Island Records, where he latterly worked as Managing Director.
Wine and food journalism
In February 2013, Keeling and his business partner, Mark Andrew, founded wine magazine Noble Rot.[4] Regular contributors include Marina O'Loughlin, John Niven, Simon Hopkinson, Jon Bonné and Rowley Leigh.[5]
Keeling has won awards for his work in food and wine journalism, including 'Emerging Wine Writer' in 2015, and 'Food & Drink Writer' in 2017 and 2018 at the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards.[6] He was also named 'Drink Writer of the Year' in 2016 at the Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards.[7]
In October 2020, Keeling and Andrew published their first book, Wine From Another Galaxy: Noble Rot. The book was longlisted for the 2020 André Simon Food and Drink book awards[8] and chosen by Financial Times|The Financial Times as one of the top books of 2020.[9]
Noble Rot restaurant and wine bar
In 2015, Keeling and Andrew opened Noble Rot Restaurant & Wine Bar on Lamb’s Conduit St in London with the kitchen overseen by Stephen Harris, chef-owner of The Sportsman in Seasalter, Kent.[4] The restaurant won the award for the best wine list at the National Restaurant Awards three years in a row from 2016 to 2018,[10] and won the 2019 award for best Red wine serving restaurant at the World Restaurant Awards in Paris.[11]
In September 2020, Keeling and Andrew opened a second restaurant, Noble Rot Soho, on the former site of the historic The Gay Hussar|Gay Hussar, with Alex Jackson as head chef.[12]
