Damijan Močnik (1967–) is a Slovenian composer, conductor, and choral director. He directs the student choirs of the Diocesan Classical Gymnasium in Ljubljana, the Megaron Chamber Choir, and the Church Women's Chorus Andrej Vavken. He has been considered part of a generation of postmodernist composers working in Slovenia,[1] and is a prominent composer of sacred choral music with an international reputation.[2][3]
Life
Damijan Močnik was born in 1967 in Kranj and lived in the village of Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia.
Music
Močnik's music is primarily choral works, many composed for performance by his own choirs, including several folk song arrangements and sacred choral music. His sacred works include a setting of St. John's Passion (2011) for four soloists, choir, and orchestra.[4] HIs style has been described as neoclassicism, with elements of polytonality.[5]
Močnik's folk song arrangements draw on material from the collection of folk song transcriptions published by the Slovenian Ethnomusicology Institute, Slovenske Ijudske pesmi. He typically uses folk songs with unusual melodies or origins in peripheral areas of Slovenia that emphasize the local singing practices of the region's where the tunes originate, such as drones or canons. His "Marija in brodnik" weaves together multiple versions of a popular folk ballad from different regions of Slovenia into a arrangement suitable for concert performance that combines singing practices of different regions.
In 2011, he was commissioned by the Libraries of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to compose a work for performance on campus; his cantata Venit Lumen was premiered at the university on December 8, 2011.[6]
In 2015 and 2016, Mocnik's mass settings were performed by the Slovenian Philharmonic Choir in Llubjana Cathedral as part of the biannual "mass for the homeland," a public religious service that has been celebrated since the Slovenia gained its independence. In 2015, his Missa brevis et simplicita was selected, and in 2016, Tisoč let je že minilo (A Thousand Years Have Passed).[7]
As a conductor, he has led the St. Stanislav Youth choir, the Megaron Chamber choir, and he founded and led the Slovenian children's choir.[8] The Megaron Chamber Choir, under Močnik's direction, won second place in the 2022 International Competition of Chamber Choirs.[9] In 2014, his St. Stanislav Youth choir received first prize and the title "Choir of the World" at the International Choral Kathaumixw festival in Powell River, Canada.[10]
Awards
In 2022, Damijan Močnik was the recipient of the Kozina Award,[11] the top award of the Society of Slovene Composers, and the Prešeren Fund Award.[12][13]
In 2019, he was awarded a silver plaque by the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of Slovenia.[14]
