Collabora Office is an enterprise-ready open source office suite sharing the LibreOffice core software, it can be installed on all major device types and operating systems; Furthermore, there is a cloud online office suite called Collabora Online which can be accessed from a modern web browser.

It is developed by Collabora Productivity, a division of Collabora who are in turn a commercial partner with LibreOffice's parent organisation The Document Foundation (TDF), the TDF state that a majority of the LibreOffice software development is done by its commercial partners, Collabora, Red Hat, CIB, and Allotropia.[3]

The desktop office suites includes applications for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams and vector graphics, database, and mathematical formulae, these support approximately 115 languages and can access file services such as Google Drive, Microsoft Sharepoint|Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft OneDrive, and others.[4] The mobile apps for tablets include word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, and are available in about 30 languages.[5]

The native file format of Collabora Office is OpenDocument|Open Document Format for Office Applications (ODF), it supports major office suites file formats including the Office Open file format created and used by Microsoft Office.[6]

Collabora Office is Cross-platform software|cross-platform supporting all major hardware platforms including processor architectures IA-32, x86-64, ARM32, and ARM64, and all major software platforms such as Windows, macOS, Linux, Android (operating system)|Android, iOS, iPadOS, and Chrome OS.[7][8]

Features

Mobile

Mobile app|Mobile apps for Collabora Office are available for Android (operating system)|Android, iOS, iPadOS, and Chrome OS, these include a word processor, a spreadsheet, and a presentation editor, with a similar functionality to Microsoft Office mobile apps.[9][10][7] The apps for Android, iOS and iPadOS have optimised touch interfaces for smartphone and tablet screen sizes, and are able to function online and offline.[11][12] The Chrome OS mobile app is similar to the Android tablet app, however, its interface is further optimised, it edits documents offline in local Play file folders, Chrome OS devices include Chromebook|Chromebooks (laptops), Chromeblets (tablets), Chromebit|Chromebits (a device that when plugged into the HDMI port of a screen which allows it to turn into a computer), and Chromebox|Chromeboxes.[13]

File:Collabora Office Impress on desktop - March 2021 sealife.png|thumb|Collabora Office Impress on the desktop, with sidebar toggled on The Collabora Office suite of desktop applications are supported on Microsoft Windows|Windows, macOS, and Linux, they include a word processor, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams and vector graphics editor, database, and a mathematical and scientific formula editor.[14] The suite works with local storage, network servers, private cloud and public cloud Internet services, the supported cloud servers include Alfresco Software|Alfresco, FTP servers, Google Drive, Microsoft Sharepoint|Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft OneDrive, and WebDAV, it works with services that support the open Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) protocol.[5]

The desktop applications have several toolbar options; A customizable tabbed toolbar similar to Microsoft's ribbon bar and the classic menu bar that is used in Google Docs.[15] All applications have an optional sidebar on the right side of the screen which provides context relevant access to features.[16][17]

Cloud solution

There is an online solution called Collabora Online which is accessible from any modern web browser from any device, it allows real-time collaborative editing. It can be purchased as a cloud service server from solution providers such as Nextcloud, or it can be installed on your own server/s so you can run your own office suite in your own cloud.[18] A development version of Collabora Online is available called Collabora Online Development Edition (CODE).[19]

Application details

The desktop applications include the following components, tablet devices do not include Base or Math, smaller smartphones devices do not include the Draw app as well.

  • Collabora Office Writer - a word processor with similar functionality to Microsoft Word with extra functionality such as the ability to embed document files within PDF files so that they can be opened in full document integrity later on.[20]
  • Collabora Office Calc - a spreadsheet editor similar to Microsoft Excel with extra functionality, such as the ability to open almost any file format, compare documents side-by-side, view a clone of your spreadsheet in another window, spell check as you type, rotate charts, add a PDF as an image, etc.[21][22] The spreadsheet editor has support for a large portion of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) Macros.[23]
  • Collabora Office Impress - a presentation editor similar to Microsoft PowerPoint|Microsoft Powerpoint. Presentations can be controlled from smartphones using the LibreOffice Impress Remote application.
  • Collabora Office Draw - a vector and rastor graphics editor is similar to Microsoft Visio, CorelDRAW, and Adobe Photoshop.[24] Connectors between shapes and lines allow building Flowchart|flowcharts, Organizational chart|organisational charts, flyers, newsletters, brochures, Diagram|diagramming and other works. It includes features similar to desktop publishing software such as Scribus and Microsoft Publisher.
  • Collabora Office Base - a database similar to Microsoft Access.
  • Collabora Office Math - mathematical and scientific formula editor, these formulas can be included in other documents in the suite.

File Formats

The Collabora Office desktop suite of applications can open over 100 file formats and save to several dozen, some of these are Open Document format|Open Document Format (odt, ods, odp, odg, odf), the Microsoft Office Open XML formats (docx, xlsx, pptx) and legacy Microsoft Office formats (doc, ppt, xls), PDF|pdf, CSV (file format)|csv, Rich Text Format|rtf. Other formats can be imported including, EPUB|epub, Microsoft Visio|Visio, Microsoft Publisher|Publisher, Apple Keynote|Keynote, Numbers (spreadsheet)|Numbers, Quattro Pro, Pages (word processor)|Pages.[6] Legacy formatted documents dating back to the first spreadsheet applications such as Lotus 1-2-3 can be imported.[25]

Cross platform support

Collabora Office supports Windows on IA-32 and x86-64, macOS on Apple M1 and x86-64 and Linux on ARM and x86-64. On February 2020 Collabora launched Collabora Office for Android and iOS, followed in July 2020 by Collabora Office for Chromebooks. On 2 June 2016 Collabora Online launched with client support for any platform that runs a modern web browser, the server side runs on Debian, FreeBSD, Ubuntu CentOS, openSUSE, Univention Virtual Machines and Docker images, these run on x86-64 and ARM64.[26]

Support

Collabora Office and Collabora Online are enterprise-ready editions of LibreOffice, LibreOffice's parent organisation The Document Foundation (TDF) encourage working with its commercial partners for enterprise-class deployments, to benefit from long-term support, technical support, custom new features, and Service-level agreement|Service Level Agreements (SLA)s.[32][33][34][35] Some Collabora employees are on the TDF board of directors.[36]

History

The former LibreOffice development team from SUSE joined Collabora in September 2013 forming the subsidiary Collabora Productivity.[37] In 2020 Collabora Office for desktops was launched, in the same year Collabora Office for mobile devices was released, this included Android, iOS and Chrome OS.[38][39]
