Colin Riley is a composer, curator, educator and academic. Alongside his creative work and running the label Squeaky Kate Music, [1] he is Reader in Music at Brunel University [2] and Head Mentor on Making Music’s Adopt a Music Creator scheme. [3]

Colin was born in Lancashire, studying at Chetham’s School of Music in the sixth form, the University of York and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His recent work includes Hearing Places (2022) - a 5-movement multi-media orchestral piece commissioned by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, The Listening Eye (2022) for cellist Louise McMonagle and electronics, Earth Voices (2020) – a five-movement orchestral suite commissioned by the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Roads Shining Like River Up Hill After Rain (2017) – a setting of text by Edward Thomas commissioned by the Oxford Bach Soloists and accompanied by Gabriella Swallow (cello), and In Place (2017) – an extended multi-media song-cycle featuring soprano Melanie Pappenheim.

His music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Radio 2 and Radio 1, and performers of his music include BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Sinfonia Viva, Bournemouth Sinfonietta, members of the London Sinfonietta, National Youth Choir of Great Britain, Oxford Bach Soloists, COMA London, Pegasus Brass, Sounds Positive, Kokoro, Ensemble Bash, Nephele Ensemble, Smith Quartet, 4sight, Duruflé Trio, Svyati Duo, duoDorT, Piano Circus, Melanie Pappenheim, Gabriella Swallow, Louise McMonagle and Guy Johnston.

His works are published by Composers Edition [4] and his media music is published by The Scoring House (West One Music) [5] and Lo Editions (Universal). [6]

Colin also creates music for, performs with and directs two of his own groups. Formed by himself in 2006, MooV combines song-writing, chamber music, electronica and improvisation, and comprises Natalie Rosario (cello), Pete Wilson (electric bass), Rob Millett (percussion) and Elisabeth Nygård (vocals). [7] Colin has produced two albums for MooV under his own label Squeaky Kate Music: Fold (2008) and Here (2012) [8]. The Homemade Orchestra, a flexible line-up of musicians coming from jazz and new music backgrounds, was formed in 2001 by himself and jazz saxophonist Tim Whitehead, and has released two albums under its own label Homemade: Tides ‎(2003), which received the Peter Whittingham Award for Innovation in Jazz [9], and Inside Covers (2004) [10]. Colin’s arrangement of Here Comes The Flood from the latter album as well as an original composition entitled Bird, in collaboration with Whitehead, feature on the track list of the 2005 release by Eclectic Video Distribution of the 1968 film, The Committee. [10] In 2008 the Homemade Orchestra collaborated with poet Michael Rosen to create settings of Rosen’s two Book[s] of Nonsense, [10] which they toured throughout the UK. The group continued its relationship with Rosen with another UK tour in 2013/14, this time with a hybrid theatre production of Centrally Heated Knickers [11] alongside an education programme.

Colin writes a regular blog called Riley Notes, a collection of entries from which he has amalgamated into a book: Composing a Concerto for Two Cellos: Pulling the threads together for 'Warp and Weft' (2017). .[12] He has also made a series of three podcasts in 2018 for Resonance FM exploring a sense of place around his work In Place. [13] There is also a journal article in Tempo exploring the relationship between the song cycle and the album form stemming from this work. [14]
