Christian Zane Erickson (born September 22, 1978) is a Canadian Home Designer. He founded his firm ZED Studio in 2012, offering custom design services across high-end residential spaces.[1] Zane is known for his unique ability to interview and interpret people's lives into a home design that is as unique as the people who live in it.[2]

Early life

Zane was born on September 22, 1978, in Surrey, British Columbia. However, he grew up in Northern Alberta. He was raised in a log house with no running water, an outhouse, and a wood-burning stove. Between the daily chores of chopping wood and filling water jars, he spent most of his childhood exploring the wild wilderness with his border collie, Prince.

Zane’s spark to design custom homes first came from a school project he completed in third grade when he had to draw an “ideal home”. This led him down a path of drawing homes as a creative outlet, pulling most of his inspiration from the houses he would fantasize about living in as he drove past them or saw them in magazines.

Zane’s family eventually moved to Grand Prairie before settling in Abbotsford, British Columbia, where he attended High School at W.J. Mouat, graduating in 1996.

During High School, Zane spent the summers of 1993 & 1994 traveling to Mexico on Missions trips to help build relief housing in Tijuana.

By 1997, Zane married his high school sweetheart, Chantel, with six kids to follow. After years of traveling, multiple moves, including Toronto, as well as overcoming several family adversities, the Erickson’s eventually returned to Abbotsford, British Columbia, and in 2010, purchased their dream property. The property in Bradner was their ”Promise Land,” with five acres for the kids to roam and a view that continues to take their breaths away.

Education

Zane graduated high school from W.J. Mouat in 1996. He then immediately completed his basic training with the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves that summer, being awarded the Layers Trophy as the top gunner to graduate.

Zane began his post-secondary education at the University of the Fraser Valley and graduated top of his class in 1997 as Class President of the Architectural Drafting and Design Program. One of his projects from the program was even chosen to be built.

He continued his studies at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Syllabus between 1997 and 1998.

Career

Throughout his career, Zane worked off and on in the construction industry, gaining a working knowledge of the building construction process.

Before establishing his design studio, Zane worked as a residential designer and technician at several private architecture firms, including Ankenman Associates Architects Inc., Site Lines Architecture Inc., and Points West Architecture.

In 2012, Zane had gained enough experience that he decided to follow his entrepreneurial passions to establish ZED Studio as the sole owner, principal director, and custom home designer.[3] His studio is known for designing bespoke legacy homes that interpret the family's story, ideals, interests, and other characteristics.

ZED Studio takes advantage of the latest technology to create its custom designs, giving customers the ability to walk through their homes in 3D before building them.[4]

The studio continues to grow and has completed several projects highlighting Zane's leadership skills, enthusiasm for art, extensive travels, and enjoyment of meticulous craftsmanship. Some of his notable residential projects include Alderside, Kinsey, Pinnacle Retreat, Chestnut, Sonora Drive, Ridge MTN, Peterson, and several others.

Personal life

When Zane is not designing spectacular houses for his customers, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Chantel, and their six children, cooking amazing food and entertaining friends and family.

Travel plays a major theme in Zane’s life, and he has spent a lot of time in Mexico, El Salvador, France, the UK, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Moldova, Peru, and Cambodia. He is always gleaning passion through the architecture and culture of the places he visits and uses this to inspire and influence his designs.

Zane values using his talents to volunteer and enrich the lives of others, including master planning a 104-hectare community for the Jesus Village Project in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
