Christian Barillot (28 December 1959 - 14 June 2020) was a French computational neuroscientist and expert of multimodal neuroimage analysis. He had been the director of several research groups in France, mostly focused on improving quality of magnetic resonance imaging and its application to multiple sclerosis.[1]

Education

Barillot was awarded both a Ph.D. and Habilitation from the University of Rennes I respectively in 1984 and 1999.[2]

Career

He obtained the position of tenured Researcher by the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) in 1986.[3] In the subsequent years he visited the Mayo Clinic and Rochester University,[3] developing methods for fast volume rendering of magnetic resonance imaging. The work culminated in the software package Analyze (imaging software).[4] Afterwards he was affiliated to the Unit 335 of INSERM (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale) and joined IRISA in their local unit also in Rennes.[5]

Between 2004 and 2020 he was the director of the VisAGeS research Unit (now called Empenn from the Breton word "empenn" meaning "brain"),[6] and from 2010 onward coordinator of the Neurinfo imaging platform.[3]

Barillot's contributions include the processing of multidimensional medical images, particularly the integration of different image modalities (e.g. T1-weighted, T2-weighted, FLAIR,etc) applied to the analysis of brain pathologies with particular attention to multiple sclerosis.[7][8][9] He contributed to the reduction of noise in magnetic resonance imaging.[10]

Barillot co-chaired some editions of the two major international conferences in medical imaging: the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (The_MICCAI_Society) conference and the Information Processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI) conference. More specifically, the 14th IPMI[11] conference in 1995 held in Brest, then in 2004 he chaired the 7th MICCAI [12] conference held in Saint-Malo. He was also a co-organizer for the MICCAI hyperintense brain lesion segmentation challenge and the Brainlesion workshop (Brainles).[13]
