ChickP Protein Ltd. is an Israeli-based company that produces protein isolate from Chickpeas.

ChickP has a patented procedure for extracting protein from Chickpeas that contains a high percentage of protein (up to 90% pure).[1][2][3] The company also produces a chickpea-based starch.[4]

Company History

The company was founded by Ram Reifen in 2016.[5] Ram Reifen is an Israeli Academic scholar and a professor of Human Nutrition, and the former Director of the Centre for Nutrigenomics and Functional Foods at The Robert H Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.[6]

Reifen studied and developed a process to extract an almost-pure protein powder from chickpeas. According to Reifen, chickpeas have “several unique attributes that make it a particularly successful source for meat, fish and dairy-product substitutes”.[7]

ChichP Isolate protein powder is currently used by companies that produce a variety of meat, eggs, and dairy replacements.[8][9][10][11]

Funding

ChickP is recognized as a key factor in the current global chickpea protein market.[12]In 2022, ChickP raised an 8 million dollar seed investment, which has concluded into a 10 million dollar investment in the company.[13] Among the investors are Growthwell Foods, Ltd, a Singapore-based company in the meat-alternative markets of Asia, and Agrinnovation, an agricultural venture capital fund that belongs to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.[14][15][16]
