Carol Akiwumi is a British social entrepreneur who founded the charity Money4YOU (formerly known as Money4Youth) in 2014[1]. She was awarded an Order of the British Empire in the 2021 New Year's Honours [2] for Services to Financial Education during Coronavirus disease 2019. Akiwumi was the Chair of Black Fundraisers UK from 2012 to 2017 and is a Fellow, Trustee and Vice Chair of the Institute of Fundraising[3][4].

Education

In 1990, Akiwumi received a B.Sc. in Economics, and subsequently an MA in Economics and Finance from the University of Leeds in 1994.

Career

Akiwumi is a former investment banker[5] who went on to start the Avocado Accelerator Programme, funded by the Tudor Trust since 2016.[6][7] The programme has since received additional funding from the Bridge House Estates' grant-making arm, the City Bridge Trust.[8] Akiwumi was Vice Chair of the Black Fundraisers Network from 2011 to 2012 and Founding Chair of Black Fundraisers UK, a Special Interest Group of the Institute of Fundraising (CIoF), from 2012 to 2017. She became a Trustee of the Institute of Fundraising in 2015. In 2019, she became Chair of the Institute of Fundraising committee on equality, diversity and inclusion[9] and, in 2020, Vice Chair of the Institute of Fundraising. She is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals USA. Akiwumi has hosted the Four Minutes in Fundraising Podcast since September 2019.[10]

Covid-19

During the Coronavirus disease 2019, Akiwumi began several digital initiatives with the aim of supporting nonprofits led by people from BAMER (Black, Asian, Multi-Ethnic and Refugee) backgrounds, chiefly under the auspices of Money4YOU. These include Money4YOU's BAMER HUB, [11] a resource centre open only to BAMER-led nonprofits.[12] Akiwumi was awarded an Order of the British Empire for 'Services to Financial Education during Coronavirus disease 2019 for her work in the BAME-led nonprofit sector during the crisis[2].
