Carlo Messina (Rome, 6 April 1962) is an Italian banker and business executive, since September 2013 CEO and Managing Director of Intesa Sanpaolo.[1]

Education

He graduated in Economics and Business at LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome in 1987.[1][2][3]

Career

Carlo Messina began his career in 1987 at Banca Nazionale del Lavoro as Manager in charge of the Corporate Finance and Primary Markets Department.[4] In 1996, he took on the role of Head of the Planning Office at Banco Ambrosiano Veneto, becoming Manager of the Planning Department in 1997. In 1998, he joined Banca Intesa as Head of the Planning and Banking Research Department and later, in 2001, he took on the role of Head of the Management Control Department of Intesa BCI, an intermediate configuration of what would then become Banca Intesa in 2003. In 2002, he was appointed Head of the Planning and Control Department.[5][6]

Intesa Sanpaolo

In Intesa Sanpaolo since 2007, Carlo Messina held the position of Head of the Value Creation Governance Area for one year, becoming then CEO in 2008 and four years later also General Manager and Chief Financial Officer.[1]

Within a year, in May 2013, he assumed the positions of General Manager and Head of the Chief Financial Officer Governance Area, becoming General Manager, Head of the Chief Financial Officer Governance Area and Head of the Banca dei Territori Division (domestic commercial banking) in June 2013. In September 2013, he took on the role of Managing Director and CEO in the Management Board.[1] Until April 2016, Intesa Sanpaolo adopted a dual governance model, consisting of a Management Board and a Supervisory Board. Subsequently, the bank switched to a one-tier system in which Carlo Messina has been holding the positions of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.[7]

On February 18th 2020, he announced the public exchange offer to UBI Banca.[8][9]

Teaching

Carlo Messina has taught Economics of Financial Intermediaries at the Business Administration Master of the LUISS Business School and Corporate Finance at the Department of Economics and Business of the University of Ancona (since 2003 Marche Polytechnic University|Università Politecnica delle Marche).[4]

Other positions held

He is a member of the Executive Committee of ABI,[10] the Bocconi University Board, [11], Carlo Alberto College Advisory Board, Osservatorio Banca Impresa Scientific Committee and JP Morgan International Council.

He is also Visiting Fellow at the Said Business School of Oxford University[12] and Fellow of the Foreign Policy Association of New York.
